Never Trump

Do you think the USSR sold the legitimacy of the Berlin wall as a way to keep people in or as a protection against the other? Politically it is the Berlin wall regardless of what it evolves into as practice.

I would say that the California-Texas Wall is nothing like the Great Wall of China. China had a legitimate reason to fear Mongolian aggression(and walls/archers were the military technology of its day, there were plenty of gates for trade in the GWOC).
We don't have a legit reason to fear drugs pouring in over our border? And I thought this wall was going to have gates for trade.

The wall Trump wants to build is symbolic. It has zero chance of making any difference in regard to illegal immigration.

The solution to our illegal immigration policy is to allow much more immigration legally and to provide the infrastructure to process the people coming in. The biggest benefit to switching to a legal immigration system instead of our current system that makes illegal the workers we need in many industries, is that we can set the criteria and prioritize the types of immigrants that we want, while providing the workers we need via a legitimate path to entry.
Why does the wall have zero chance of working? We disagree on completely opening up the border, though we do agree on allowing more legal immigration.

As much as I recoil at everything Trump seems to represent, scenes like this in San Jose last night only play directly into Trump's hands. It may be true to say that if Trump had not launched his campaign with inflammatory and hateful rhetoric, scenes like this would not mar his rallies. Even if there is truth to that, people are responsible for their actions, and the onus is on them for behavior like this....

I'm as anti-Trump as just about anyone (heck, I started this thread). But protestors like this are far more fascist than they are accusing Trump of being. It's horrible.

That's definitely not a libertarian position. Libertarians want to end the drug war not expand it. Libertarians believe that people own their bodies and have the right and the responsibility to decide what to put into it. They believe that when government tries to make that decision for people, especially in terms of banning things, they end up making the problems associated with whatever they are banning much worse. Libertarians are for free markets not black markets created by the government.

Because humans have the technology to overcome a physical wall in the middle of the desert.

There have been several very large tunnels discovered under what barriers we currently have in place.

Airplanes, boats, a ladder, etc. A wall is not the answer.

Forget the wall, stopping/slowing immigration is not the answer. Our economy was as good as it ever has been when we had immigrants coming in by the millions. They worked and created wealth for this country. Now that we are aging we want to stop that?

The worst part is that it looks like it doesn't matter what we do. The immigrants aren't coming like they used to. There has been zero net immigration from Mexico since 2010 and with their declining birth rates it doesn't look like it will ever pick back up. So not only would a wall not keep people out but for the most part it looks like on net people aren't going to be trying anyway.

But if I can't have an irrational fear of waves of brown people ****ing up my culture what am I supposed to have an irrational fear of?

A physical wall with video would eliminate the ladder issue. Tunnels have been discovered and shut down. They can make this a very difficult thing to accomplish in the future, especially because in order to hide a tunnel it has to emerge inside of a structure on the US side, so this is really only an issue near border cities. Airplanes cannot enter US airspace undetected. That system is already in place. Boats are probably the biggest issue that a wall doesn't solve, but only small ones could dock in the US undetected so the vast majority could be handled with a wall.
