Well, considering David Stern was a gambler too and they rigged the playoffs every year, then Jordan's background problem actually helped his status as a top 3 player all time.

Do I think David Stern did everything in his power to build the NBA by making life as easy as possible for MJ? Absolutely. As Bird and Magic faded and cocaine was an issue and the NBA wasn't firmly established, they hitched their wagons to MJ, guarded him from any negativity, and built the icon.
