Prosecutors said Brelo, 31, was one of 13 officers who fired 137 times into the couple's car in the November 2012 shooting. The 22-mile, high-speed chase through Cleveland began when an officer tried pulling over Russell for a turn signal violation. His car backfired while speeding away, causing officers to think someone in the car had fired a gun.

Thirteen officers fired upon the car at the end of the chase, including Brelo, who prosecutors said stood on the car's hood when it was stopped and shot 15 times into the windshield. He told the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation that he thought he and his partner were being shot at.

wait. . . . you want the cops to hold street trials and hang hoods on the lampposts? Or, should they just select which people on the street need immediate execution, and gun'em down. Or, for variety, bayonet a few?

As bad as our jails and prisons are, it's totally understandable why someone with a warrant on some felony charge would choose to go down shooting.

Don't the cops have computer apps so all they need to do is enter a plate number and press "Freeze", and the car's engine will turn itself off forcing the perp to pull over? And don't the cops have drones that can lethally laser-tag a perp from 300 feet in the air, and isn't that system linked to allow command from officers on the street? And don't we already have self-driving cars that can be hijacked by cops and driven to the police station, into a gas chamber where the "live" ammo can be neutralized?

And isn't the above realities the reason why some folks say we should have the right to fight back? Instead of courts with equal protection under the law, now we are gonna have streets with equal armaments just like in our video games. Great.

The only part I kind of get is with that many shots going it would be easy to think a few of them are coming from the "bad guys" car. Also if your going to shoot to kill, you gotta jump up on the car like your dirty freaking harry.

Now, when scenarios like this happen your blood flows and adrenaline is pumping. Mistakes and bad judgements happen.

However, law enforcement is specifically trained for these scenarios. They have policies, training and instruction on when and how to fire their weapon. That MUST be factored into any judgement of these cases. They as a result should get less leway than an average citizen.

I don't have enough facts but on the surface this looks to be a terrible decision to me. I can certainly understand the anger/outrage over this one (just as I could the Garnier case in NY).

I wonder how much the roles of adrenaline, fight-or-flight psychology, stress, not knowing who/when/where someone might kill you because of your profession are considered when accessing situations like this.

On paper, it looks horrible but yet has a polarized viewpoint from everyone. They shouldn't have run! They shouldn't have gone John Rambo!

The underlining issues here, imo, comes down to violence (which unfortunately, is something that can't be cured,) being a police officer is one of the hardest jobs to have on every level, media (being propagated and spewed terrible violent crimes from citizens and police officers,) situational over/emotional reactions stemmed from one not knowing what could happen (that goes both ways too,) etc, etc, etc.

In other words, it's freaking complicated. I hate people.

depends 10-11 shots per officer could have been over in 2-5 seconds depending on the weapons.

again have not seen any other info. so might be that those 137 shots have been fired over 30-60 seconds or whatever then it is excessive.

Now as far as this particular case, I tend to agree that this homicide (wasn't ruled a murder, right?) looks very suspect. I very much wish to know what the grand jury saw that made them decide to acquite this officer.

Random thought. Would the release of all the details, a concise and documented press release, in a case like this hurt or help the tension around it? Would it lead to understanding (not the same as agreement) or lead to further alienate parts of society?

I don't think anyone thinks that adrenaline is an excuse for murder. It's undeniably and contributing factor in a lot of situations though.

Disarm the people expect for hunting. Problem solved. We have police and military we dont need militant peoples. This isnt the Wild West where we need posse's to hunt down rapists and blame it on some poor black kid.
