NFL Talk

Marino had some cocain/mary jane rumors that dogged him during his draft too. I actually like Mallet and was really hoping Miami took him with their 2nd round pick.

LOL, half the top picks in the early to mid 80's had cocaine rumors following them. Do you really think that Don Shula would have drafted him to play in MIAMI, Florida of all places if those rumors had any validity to them whatsoever?

Marino had a complete meltdown in the bowl game his senior year - the FO's in the NFL blew it because that is what they judged him on.

Consistently having top shelf offensive lineman throughout his entire career helped a lot too.

His lines were solid but nothing spectatcular. Richmond Webb peaked as a rookie imo. So did the rookie LG next to him. I forget his name. He may have had Stephenson but not for that long if I remember correctly. All in all, his lines were average. Maybe slightly above average.

Keith Sims is the LG your thinking of and yes I agree with you, a better then avg pass protecting line for sure but avg or less then avg at everything else.

Miami always had veteran offensive lineman.

Keith Simms, Jeff Dellenbach, Richmond Webb, Tim Ruddy were all All-Pros at one time or another in their career.

The Dolphins turned it around in the early 90's when they drafted Richmond Webb - I don't think that was a coincidence.

Before that you had Dwight Stephenson who many think to this day is the best Center in the history of the NFL.

You also had Ed Newman and Roy Foster who were multi year All-Pros. Jon Giesler (who I could have sworn was an All-Pro at one time in his career) and Ron Heller were top shelf veterans.

I remember the year Marino blew out his achillies and they put in that POS Scott Mitchell who managed to string together a few good games. Any success he had was due to the fact that Miami had the best OL in the league. When he was traded to Detroit he was exposed as the mediocrity that he was.

Good job - with the Chris Johnson situation unresolved I think you can argue you have 3 of the top 6 backs in the league right now. You can't argue with Manning at 55 and Ingram at 66 is a great value pick.

My only criticism would be if this is not a points per reception league Austin should not have been the best receiver available at 35. I think if Dez Bryant keeps his head on straight, pushes Austin to be the #1 receiver in Dallas - or at least #1A.

I Like Ronnie Brown, Ingram, Stafford, Manning and Turner. You are going to be let down by the Saints D. and Lloyd/Austin. Great round to take Winslow though.

I think you are going to lose.

Just as an aside I would love it if FF never reared it's head in a thread for the NFL again.

IMO FF poisons all fans and causes normally loyal guys to root for the wrong team.

I won't miss it. Go Browns!

I don't really agree with that. I will always be loyal to the Saints, and cheer for them over any of my fantasy players. Fantasy only extends my interest to other teams. If I didn't play fantasy, I really wouldn't care about any other team in the league at all.

Oh, and Dez Bryant was picked right before I got Austin. And yes, its a .5 points per reception league.

I knew there was a Center I was forgetting about but I still think my point still stands somewhat, in that if the line was as good as you're thinking they would've been able to to produce an avg running back or propel an avg running back to look above avg. Heck I remember the RB's (Byars for example) more for pass catching then running, heck Bernie Parmalee & Jabbar (the only RB to rush for 1k yrds in Marino's career but only did it in his rookie year) might've been the best runners they had and they were avg to below avg at best.

Oh and what's with the Mitchell hate? He was a 4th round pick that managed to have a season with 4K+ yrds and 32 TD on a team with one of the worst QB history and overall losing (like the Clips) in the NFL, now if you brought up the Lions OL's back then they're absolutely terrible. Although it appears they're turning it around (I hope) as I've always loved Sanders he's the best RB I've seen play IMO.

Dellenbach never made a pro bowl.
Ruddy made one as a second alternate. Color me unimpressed. Michael Lewis made one as a strong safety for the Eagles. As a starter. And he's sucked ever since. One pro bowl appearance does not mean a player is anything special.
Stephenson, as I originally said, only played til 87, a season in which he played just nine games due to his career-ending injury, so only for about a fourth of Marino's career.
Newman only played 'til 84 for them. Great. So he played for about a year and a half with Marino.
Webb and Simms, as already admitted by myself were good players, a bit better than I gave them credit for. Foster was solid too. I forgot about him

This doesn't change anything. I originally said he had solid lines, maybe slightly above average and I stand by that. That's all they were.
