What's new

NFL Talk

I knew there was a Center I was forgetting about but I still think my point still stands somewhat, in that if the line was as good as you're thinking they would've been able to to produce an avg running back or propel an avg running back to look above avg. Heck I remember the RB's (Byars for example) more for pass catching then running, heck Bernie Parmalee & Jabbar (the only RB to rush for 1k yrds in Marino's career but only did it in his rookie year) might've been the best runners they had and they were avg to below avg at best.

Jabbar and Parmalee had bad careers because they were bad running backs. Jabbar couldn't break a tackle to save his life - that's not the OL fault. Parmalee was a special teams player at best on most other clubs.

Byers wasn't a runner - never was. He made his living (and the All-Pro Team one year) as a receiver out of the backfield.

Right or wrong, The Dolphins didn't have a developed running game because they never bothered to develop one. Shula decided very early on that he was going to live and die on Marino's arm. Even still Dolphins running backs generally had decent yards per carry numbers thoughout most of the 80's and early 90's - they just didn't run a lot. In a different system for example, I'm pretty convinced Tony Nathan would have been a multi year 1000 yard rusher.l

Dellenbach never made a pro bowl.
Ruddy made one as a second alternate. Color me unimpressed. Michael Lewis made one as a strong safety for the Eagles. As a starter. And he's sucked ever since. One pro bowl appearance does not mean a player is anything special.
Stephenson, as I originally said, only played til 87, a season in which he played just nine games due to his career-ending injury, so only for about a fourth of Marino's career.
Newman only played 'til 84 for them. Great. So he played for about a year and a half with Marino.
Webb and Simms, as already admitted by myself were good players, a bit better than I gave them credit for. Foster was solid too. I forgot about him

This doesn't change anything. I originally said he had solid lines, maybe slightly above average and I stand by that. That's all they were.

Sigh.....when does school start again?

I'm having trouble deciphering your take on my post.

I'm just joking dude.

I really have nothing to add. Other than the 84 Dolphins OL gave up 13 sacks in 18 games. Now you'll probably attribute that to a young Marino and his quick release and you may have somewhat of a point; but those numbers are unbelievable as were most sack %'s for the Dolphin OL. I challenge you to find a better sacks-per-pass-attempt numbers in NFL history than The Dolphins OL throughout the mid 80's to mid 90's.

I have no problem saying the 84-86 OLs and the 93-94 OLs for the Dolphins were easily two of the best in my lifetime.

I'm not gonna look up the numbers because I'd be shocked if Marino didn't have the best sacks per game or per pass attempt virtually every year. But if we're ranking why, I say very confidently that it has much more to do with his quick release and sidestep ability than his offensive line. His o-lines were nothing like the Alex Gibbs o-lines, the Hogs, those huge Cowboys lines, the semi-recent Chiefs ones with Willie Roaf and on and on. They were solid lines but not much else.

I'm surprised this thread is so quite this close to the start of Week 1.

The 49ers got good news today. No suspension for Braylon Edwards. That signing looks that much better now.

Interesting that the Jaguars cut Garrard. Wonder who will end up signing him now.

I don't want to jinx them anymore. Since the thread started 3 Browns have gone to IR and my starting RT is in a walking boot. On the other hand, it looks more and more like Manning is having a lot more trouble with his neck injury than was originally let out. Nobody knows when he is gonna play, almost definitely not week 1. So my earlier scenario looks pretty likely.

Garrard will surely be picked up by someone. Seattle when they realize Jackson sucks?
How long before Gabbert starts in Jacksonville? I'd bet if not before the bye week, it will be the first game after.

I selected Greg Little as one of my late round picks in my fantasy league. He looks super talented and I've heard he's going to start immediately. Considering they're playing the Bengals, I think he could definitely be one of those Week 1 surprises that racks up big numbers.

Do you have any impression of him yet?

Also the Bills need a QB so that is another possible spot and although not likely it wouldn't be a far move if Carolina picked him up so they don't have throw Newton to the fire.
