What's new

Nikola Mirotic

Every trade and player is a failure when you measure them with "do we win a title" or "does he help us win a title" it is so hard and rare to win a title. You want a building block that helps you win... Niko can be that. His timeline is fine and it is hard to line up timelines perfectly... in part because young guys flame out all the time. We can worry about championship windows when we are a consistent playoff team.

Get Niko if the price is right... pay him in two years if he's worth it. We will still need another big piece.

I agree with this.

People keep talking about winning a championship but that is a huge leap. It is unlikely to happen unless we get lucky. Just build a good consistent playoff team and then hope to get lucky or make an all in move at that time.

Bulls would value him, he's young, cheap, and doesn't help them win a single game this year (they're tanking for a top 3 pick).

Of course they do. There are other assets we have that can be used to get Mirotic. We should value him more than giving him up for Mirotic. Exum is a next 10 years talent potentially. Mirotic is a next 5. DL - do not give up on Exum yet.

Mirotic is most likely better than any player we’d draft.

Only a moron would give up Mirotic to tank for a player not as good as Mirotic.

This is a no brainer for Utah.
You have no basis to make a determination on if that player will be better than Mirotic. You have no basis to say the player will be worse.

Lmfao, is this?

Edit: Listen up guys! No one drafted in 2021 will every be better than Hill and no one drafted in 2022 will be better than Ingles. So just run this mill as is. No brainer.

When you can get a 6 ft 10 player who is an above average three point shooter or a 10-15 pick, take the bird in the hand.

To take that risk, to not go after Mirotic because you “hope” you can get a player that “might” be as good...

Be smart. Odds are the draft pick won’t be as good. Mirotic is very, very good. He has borderline all star potential. His age is right. His role fits perfectly with Utah.

It’s a no brainer. It really is.

I understand that completely. My counter argument is this - is it worth getting rid of our best current assets (Hood, expirings, Favors) for Mirotic OR maybe try to get a top end lottery pick for this year or next? Do we use our assets for Mirotic or do we use our assets for a younger higher risk / higher reward type target?

It’s no secret...I don’t like Hood. He is so overrated and is about to become massively overpaid. I’d give up Hood, a bench player for us, for Mirotic, a starter who fits in perfectly with Mitchell and Gobert.

Take the bird in hand.

Portis is scary.

I can see why Mirotic would want out of Chicago. Definitely.
Yeah, so can we have that guy?

I can tell you that a very real concern is that you SPEND ASSETS to get a guy that can just walk, AFTER making the pick worse.

I'm not necessarily a tank jockey, but draft picks are serious assets, and UFAs rarely re-sign here. Almost never?

With the direction we’ve headed this season I’m not okay giving up this years first round pick. I don’t want to see Exum leave either. Mitchell is amazing, and Dante still dominated everyone in summer league. Exum is going to be a good player if he can stay healthy. I would be very upset to see Exum go anywhere. Exum will be good, he just needs to stay on the court. He’s still extremely young and very talented. If we give up a pick I would prefer it weren’t this years but I can see why you would do it as well considering DL has held on to all the Jazz first round picks going forward giving up one isn’t a huge deal but if it’s possible to do it without giving it up it’d be better for sure.

Exum likely complements our core about as much as Mirotic does. But I would value our pick over Exum because it represents 6-7 years of play for the Jazz.

Exum may have 10 more years, but they may not necessarily be with the Jazz.

Draft picks can be good -- look at Mitchell. Look at Gobert. Yes, we've hit on two dynamite draft picks -- can we consistently do that? That requires more than just good talent evaluation -- it requires some of those guys to be on the board. Historically speaking, gambling on that isn't the surest bet. I think landing Gobert and Mitchell has colored our glasses a little bit. I'm not necessarily saying trade a first rounder for him, but those worried about our pick getting worse because of him or ruining the tank is fairly myopic. In this case (if you can get him), Mirotic is a bird in the hand, the draft pick may or may not be a pigeon in the bush.
