Public executions were mass entertainment in their day. Punters would be hung or beheaded in the market square, local traders would set at stalls to sell to the crowds of peasants who'd folk to town for the festivities or to watch their starving neighbour be executed for stealing a loaf of bread, local dignitaries would rent rooms overlooking the gallows and have elegant parties in anticipation of the show. Actually sounds like a fun weekend in Riyadh....

Don't really grok the punitive appeal for folks on any side of the issue.

Ideally prison gets folks back on track in life but in extreme cases removes members from society who've proven they can't be trusted. Hopefully they can still have somewhat productive/rewarding lives behind bars (though obviously a long ways to go on that).

I generally support the right to die as one of the most fundamental human rights, and so would prefer the decision to spend life in prison or to end their life should be up to each individual facing a life sentence.

It’s sad that some people are just messed up. I grew up with the brother of a guy that ended up sexually assaulting 5+ women in college (no one knows the exact count). He eventually was prosecuted after raping a child. I don’t necessarily think he should be executed. But I have zero confidence that he would live a productive life anymore. I can’t imagine that he won’t return to his messed up ways if he were ever freed. I just don’t know if it’s even possible to come back from something like that. Something gets messed up in one’s head.

in your opinion. There's a percentage of the population that are psychopathic that will never have remorse and no amount of sitting in prison dwelling on their sins will change anything within them.
