Which is just one more reason why there shouldn't be a death penalty. Sit in a cell and think about what you did.
Don't really grok the punitive appeal for folks on any side of the issue.
Ideally prison gets folks back on track in life but in extreme cases removes members from society who've proven they can't be trusted. Hopefully they can still have somewhat productive/rewarding lives behind bars (though obviously a long ways to go on that).
I generally support the right to die as one of the most fundamental human rights, and so would prefer the decision to spend life in prison or to end their life should be up to each individual facing a life sentence.
