What's new

Game Thread Oct 08, 2025 06:00PM MT: Utah Jazz @ Houston Rockets (Preseason)

Tay's stroke looks so much better than pre-injury. Looks like he has used his time out well. He even had a nice floater on the baseline. Looks like a completely different player. Just one game, but I was pleasantly surprised. Although he did seem to miss when he had a defender close by.

WCJ seemed to play nervous. I still think he'll be a baller.

Key still showed some tendencies to force offense, but looked more in control. He was making an effort on D but still needs improvement.

Brice continued where he left off. The Jazz have some good young players.

Key is a good passer and we know he can score. 9 assists with 0 turnovers tonight. averaged 6 assists last year despite playing off the ball a lot. we won't mistake him for jokic or lebron out there, but he's a solid passer.
The left hand one hander off the dribble was nasty. He's a very good passer, maybe even great, but he does need to improve his downhill playmaking.

Yeah, night/day difference on his jumper. Doesnt shoot a rope anymore.

Only negative I have on Ace is no free throws outside of taking a tech. Everything else was beautiful. I dont mind him taking 2-3 tough middies a game if he's playing hard.
If he gets the stuff at the rim and keeps it more threes than middies then he can still be efficient on volume.

Very impressed.

Bailey's dunks were cool but most of his makes weren't easy. He started with some mid-range, had a few contested threes and a nice put-back as well. The drive to the basket scoop was nice too. And those steals were sweet. Ace Bailey turned 19 two months ago - crazy stuff as he played so well and looked comfortable out there.

Also Cody is 100% spending most of his time in the G-League. Dude just cannot assert himself currently. I did like that baseline drive he had, but he didnt do much in his minutes.

Cody's body looks much improved over last year, but still needs much more improvement. He didn't get very many minutes and very few touches last night, so I'm not going to take too much away. I think the big thing is that we just have much more promising prospects to develop at this point, so yeah I can see him in the G-League. That said, there is no reason to give Svi minutes, preseason or otherwise, over anyone else on our team.

I do really really really hope that Cody works out though, because I think he has some of the best defensive instincts/potential of our wings.

I want him to be the point guard of the future. I prefer the PG (all positions really) to have size advantages. Main reason I didn't like the WCJ pick.
9 assists and zero turnovers in 27 minutes was nice!
Size advantages are most impactful on the defensive side—and they get neutered whenever a player has a bad case of ball-watching disease. Keyonte can get that pretty bad.

It was a nice drive and he had the tiniest bit of contact and it affected him more than it should. Still too weak.

I'm just not sure Cody has an identity at this level of play. You could argue he's a more skilled player than Hendricks, for example, but TH's abilities are so relevant and desired. He had some nice drives yesterday (even if he didn't finish), but there's not really a spot on an NBA roster for a mid slashing wing who can't shoot. That's his game, but it's not very useful. If he was a better shooter with no slashing that would be a better package for sticking around in the league. I like his on ball defense, but he is also not much of a defender outside of on ball defense. He probably needs be like a Corey Brewer or Justin Holliday to stick around, but he doesn't play with close to the same energy.

Ace looks huge out there. We’ve never had a player his size with his skillset.

I really don’t think he could have played much better. That is an insane thing to say about a just-turned 19 year-old in his first NBA action.
He really does look big out there. This will sound weird but I have always though guys who wear the t-shirt under the jersey look bigger. Cant see the thin arms. Also wears the socks all the way up to the shorts almost making it look like he is wearing pants.

I always hated wearing sleeves when I played. Hell, I preferred to play without a shirt. Always felt like the sleeves affected my shot by just a little bit lol.

Not going to lie a part of me started to wonder if we should pick up Cody’s third year option. Deadline is Halloween. I wonder if we could move him before then.

I think the Jazz will keep him. Their hope would be to turn him into a Jaden McDaniels or Herb Jones in a year or two. His problem is that his offensive skills aren’t translating and he’s just not going to touch the ball when there are guys like Ace, Brice, Key and Lauri out there. The league as a whole just keeps getting better.

Defensively, he actually looked good last night.

Also, Amen is going to be freaking incredible. He's like Westbrook, but with self-awareness and actual elite defense.
amen is like russ if he were 4 inches taller and he also reminds me of zion in terms of his ability to find the ball near the rim in positions to get easy open dunks and layups and overpower smaller players for easy paint buckets. he's just always hanging around near the paint and he knows what to do with it once he gets it. he also has that zion quality with the ball on the perimeter where you know he's not going to shoot it, he's 100% going to the rim and there isn't much you can do to stop it.

and he has so much energy on defense as well. he's tough.
