What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

All it says is that Utah reached out to him to gauge interest. Not that Stockton was interested or even going to be interviewed.

My view is that Stockton will not be interested, read back, I never debated that issue. Gauging interest is part of the interview process, but let's not digress into semantics.

Apparently I'm wrong according to Locke...maybe I'll take the time to refute his premise a bit (that the best route to being a successful coach is straight from playing). But I agree with you that it is ideal to "learn the ropes." However, I'll disagree with you on not hiring a coach who has previous HC experience. If that were the case, you'd generally just get one of the recycled HC's who has failed somewhere before. Or you get a coach jumping up from college, which seems to be one of the least successful routes. Ideally, in my mind, you want one of the bright assistants coaches from a successful NBA team. Or, perhaps a guy like Messina wanting to prove he can be as successful in the NBA as he was internationally.

The two most successful modern coaches, Phil and Pops, both were HC at a lower level for a few years. Pops at a DIII school and Phil with a minor league club. For what it is worth.

I think that this belief in Stockton as HC is a bad combination nostalgia and hope. Sure, he could turn out to be great, but there in nothing certain to base that on. As I recall, he had Jerry call every single play during his entire career. Is that a guy who wants to lead, who makes decisions?

But Locke said...

Personally, I don't like the idea of a college coach. Many have tried and failed miserably of late. But we're not getting one anyway. And I completely agree re: Stockton. Fine to come back as an assistant, but I just don't see him as a HC.

I found this and was amazed - Maccabi has only the 11th highest budget among Euro BB clubs -
https://www.ballineurope.com/european-basketball/budgets-of-basketball-clubs-in-europe/

In Europe, where there is no draft system - budget is huge.
Blatt taking the cup with a team not in the top 10 budget-wise, is not less than spectacular.

I'm not sure this is precise and it's definately not this year's list as Alba Berline didn't participate this year. Still it's safe to say that Tel Aviv has less budget than the behemoths.

Why don't we just hire Greg Popovich when Tim Duncan and Ginobli retire(maybe this year?) He's got ties to Dl right?

Maybe DL is waiting to see if we win the lottery before he pitches it to Pop, or decided to go long term on a coach. Maybe Pop would love the idea once he sees our roster after we add Wiggins.

Guys I would be ok with as head coach 1) David Blatt 2)Messina - those are my two guys internationally. I think Stockton should be an assistant to see if he even likes coaching at the NBA level. I was interested in Kevin Ollie until he re-signed with UCONN. Longbardi is another guy I would consider if the Jazz were going for a young and upcoming coach.
