What's new

***Official new head coach search thread*** (merged)

FYI, CSKA won the 3rd game(76-73) against Lokomotiv Kuban in VTB so the series 2-1 now. (Loko leading)

Fourt game will be tomorrow, if Kuban wins Messina will be officially done with CSKA, if not, the fifth game is on 26th.

I will say this:

Of most the names listed, Alvin Gentry is a coach I can get behind. He's really well liked in Phoenix and I know his dismissal was contentious among their fans. He really did bring that team together during their run to the 2010 Western Conference Finals. Thing is, his record sucks. It's only slightly better than Corbin's. So, it's going to be a tough sell to the fans if he's the guy - since, beyond one season in Detroit and that one season in Phoenix, his overall record is pretty abysmal.

Still, I think much of it is also tied to the fact he took over struggling franchises (LA specifically) and a coach is really only as good as the talent on the court.

The problem is he improved franchises for one year, then they all went in the tank again.

1. Detroit: he took over late and went 16-21. Next season their record was 29-21 (only 50 games due to lockout). But he was just 28-30 with the Pistons the next season.

2. LAC: Improved from 31 to 39 wins, then 19-39 when he was fired mid season of his third year.

3. Phoenix: Improved from 18 to 54 wins, then regressed to 40-42, followed by 33-33 (strike shortened year) and then were 13-28 when he was fired.

A.Gentry? Serriously, that boring old man? I though we are done with dinosaurs since Sloan left. Hiring him would be worse than drafting ****:/

On its face, like his overall record, the numbers don't warrant a look. However, it's also important to look at the context of every season and the change between those seasons. Was Gentry's 54 win team the same as the 40 win team a year later?

In 2011, he had to replace Amar'e Stoudemire, who was instrumental in the Suns' success during their 00s heyday and the trajectory clearly, due to lack of talent and age, went south - something that didn't just end with Gentry's firing.

I think Gentry is a good coach. I think he's done some good things as a Clippers assistant and the style he potentially could run at Utah would be exciting - something sorely lacking even during the high mark of the post-Stockton/Malone Sloan era.

Is he my number one option? No. Would I take him over some of the other names mentioned - namely Boylen, Griffin and Snyder? Absolutely.

That's only true if the Jazz renounce all their own free agents, including Gordo and Marvin, and release the players on unguaranteed contracts.

Projected Salary Cap: $63.2mm

6 guaranteed contracts + 6 minimum roster charges: $30.2mm = $33mm cap space
6 guaranteed contracts + Gordo's cap hold + 5 minimum roster charges: $38.3mm = 24.9mm cap space
6 guaranteed contracts + Marv's cap hold + 5 minimum roster charges: $40.9mm = $22.3mm cap space
6 guaranteed contracts + Gordo and Marv's cap holds + 4 minimum roster charges: $49.1mm = $14.1mm cap space

Guaranteed contracts: Favors, Kanter, Burke, Burks, Evans, Gobert = $27,149,862
Gordo's cap hold: $8,630,458
Marv's cap hold: $11,250,000
Minimum roster charge: $507,336

Unguaranteed contracts (not included above): Lucas, Garrett, Thomas, Clark
I'd have no problem renouncing all of the free agents except for Gordon Hayward. Have to do his RFA tender and probably end up matching any contract offers. Marvin can come back at a much lower salary or not at all (I'm not opposed to either result tbh.) I don't see any true max player coming to Utah right now. Good info. Thanks.

People need to calm down about the coach. DL is doing the right thing and making sure they have done their homework before deciding on a coach. Save all the tears, complaining and grinding of teeth for the actually announcement. YOu might be surprised and be happy and if he choose a coach you hate, guess what?, you can rant away. So rest up, chill and be happy. :)

I agree bro as long as DL is not waiting for Boylen!

Thanks for the update. Still have hope Messina gets an interview after his season ends.

CSKA wins the 4th game as well(79-78), the series tied 2-2.

Utah Jazz: Gentry, Griffin may be at top of team’s coaching list

Adrian Griffin is finishing up his Doctorate in leadership studies... would he be 'Coach Dr. Griffin'?

I do like the idea of a Thibodeou disciple.

Alvin Gentry to me, will always be the coach with the bright idea of slowing down the suns offense
