Official trade Exum and/or Bradley into cap space thread

IMO it makes sense at this point to see if Ex can become what the FO believes he can become and what we all hope he becomes. Let's see what happens this year. If he pans out, that is great and he becomes our PG when MC leaves. As for Bradley, it will surprise me if he ever is a contributing member of an NBA team.
What if this year doesn’t work out and the FO still believes? Do we give him another year?

Exum's contract becomes very movable come trade deadline.
Why? He has another year after the upcoming year. The passing of that amount of time only substantially improves his value if he has a career year over that time.

The thing with Exum is that if we don't deal him away before next summer we might lose Royce when his deal expires
Oh, that’s another thing you could do with the capspace: give Royce a substantial raise this upcoming year by renegotiating it as part of an extension to save money on the added years. If we can avoid the hand-wringing about his RFA, that has real value.

We can extend Royce regardless of cap space. Once we get through free agency, we will be extending him.

If they're smart The Jazz are going to try to lock up O'Neal this season. Either way he's an RFA.

So I was just wondering about this. If once the Conley and Davis deals go through, can we then extend Royce now to like 4/20 to push us over the cap, and by doing so, get the full MLE?

Pretty sure that’s a no. Pretty sure you can only give such a raise with remaining capspace, capped by the soft cap. The Jazz have no cap, so this isn’t an option currently.

If they could get him a big raise this year, they could theoretically front-load the deal and/or possibly make the third year a team option (2021 in this case)*.

*the next offseason the Jazz should be targeting since that is:
-the last offseason period where Mitchell’s number is on the rookie scale (pre-contract signing, a la Kawhi waiting to sign his max in 2015 to get Aldridge)
-Gobert expires (he doesn’t have to have the super max signed early, if that’s even what it takes to retain him)
-Conley’s deal expires (if he decides to opt-in after next offseason).
-Ingles’ deal expires (I think he will come cheap on his next deal FWIW)
(-Exum’s deal expires if he is still here)

If we did this, we’d have ~11.75M in cap space and the following:

Conley
Mitchell-O’Neale
Bogdonavic-Ingles
Niang
Gobert-Davis

I’d go after Morris at ~2/10, Green at ~3/15, and Caruso at minimum. Pipe dream.

I’m sure Tomas will get far more but the longer time goes on, I become more interested in him, Joseph or another solid pg.

You missed the part where we can give him a raise for this upcoming season. But only if we have cap-space.
I'm 99% sure we can sign him to an extension sometime this fall that goes into effect for the 2020-21 season. It would be like Winslow's with Miami last fall.
