So here we were thinking BYU was getting in excess of $1 million, possibly as much as $2 million per home game from ESPN.

WRONG.

Why do you believe the new source over the previous sources?

Actually, here's what was previously reported:
https://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/cougars/50203188-88/byu-holmoe-conference-espn.html.csp
estimates put it anywhere between $800,000 and $1.2 million per home game. Brown said a minimum of three BYU home games per year

So maybe the new source is just quoting the minimum. $1.2 million per game x 3 games = $3.6 million, which would then exactly match the "nearly $4 million per year" number from the new article. Of course, if additional games beyond the minimum are broadcasted by ESPN (as they are this year), then the number goes up from there.

But that's missing one of the major points... a critical piece of the deal was that BYUTV can broadcast (or rebroadcast) the games as well. So you'd have to somehow be able to put a dollar figure on that.

Plus, don't teams in conferences often have to share money from gate receipts? If so, then you'd have to figure that BYU is making a more on gate receipts now than they used to. Say 65,000 tickets at about $25/ticket, that's another $1.65 million per game that they don't have to share with anyone.

Um... cuz it's ESPN. You know, the people who the contract is actually with.

Very true. You are correct, sir. Except for the fact that BYUTV does not garner much advertising revenue... or so I've been told.

I have a hard time believing BYU is making more on gate receipts now than they used to. Especially given that they've had to resort to GroupOn deals to sell tickets.

NOTICE THE SOURCE IS ESPN.

For those that have a hard time with math, $4 million / 6 home games = $667,000 per home game. And that's if we're generous and say that the "nearly $4 million a year" is close enough to round up.

Love it.

Looooooooove it!

Lefty, I like you, I really do. As a fellow Ute fan I am always interested to see your posts, but this one made me cringe. A lot.

As a Ute fan, it shouldn't matter what type of money BYU is earning from it's ESPN deal. Following it, posting on it, and trying to pick out flaws about it will only further the notion by some that Utah fans are still measuring themselves against BYU.

The best advice I can give you is just kick back, relax, don't worry about what kind of money BYU is getting for TV rights, and enjoy the PAC 12 revenue that is about to be coming Utah's way. Utah is in an AMAZING position to strengthen all of their athletic programs in the coming years. Worrying about what your rival is pulling in is just silly.

Personally, I think the ESPN deal for BYU is great. Regardless of the exact $$$ that's being brought in, it's still better than being stuck on The Mountain.

You are right, of course.

I suppose it's simply that knee jerk reaction I make because BYU fans are always trying to get under our skin flaunting the ESPN deal because it's "sooooo good".

I shall attempt to take the higher road moving forward.

Thank you, sir. May I have another?

Wat?

I'm ALL about kicking byu while they are down.

Does this make me obsessed with byu? No.

Does this make me a dick? Yes.

Don't get me wrong, I see where you're coming from.

I just think the only figures we should be interested in are 8 out of the last 11.

I thought I was going to possibly be able to go down to the AZ State game... :(

Not going to happen now. SAD FACE.

I don't know. But advertising revenue is largely irrelevant. The point of putting football games on BYUTV is to (a) make it available for BYU fans (who then may well contribute to the university, if you want to talk monetary value), and (b) to draw people into BYUTV who might not otherwise go there (and give those people some exposure to the church).

I have a hard time believing BYU is making more on gate receipts now than they used to. Especially given that they've had to resort to GroupOn deals to sell tickets.

The only GroupOn deal I saw was for a "Cosmo Club" thing for kids, or something like that. Here's what Wikipedia says about their attendance this season so far:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_BYU_Cougars_football_team

August 30 8:15 PM Washington State LaVell Edwards Stadium • Provo, UT 57,045
September 8 1:00 PM Weber State LaVell Edwards Stadium • Provo, UT 60,314
September 15 8:00 PM at Utah Rice-Eccles Stadium • Salt Lake City, UT 45,653

(One of these numbers is not like the others. Hmm...)

Tickets for the next home game are selling for $25 - $85. Link. Looks like my $1.65 million estimate may have been low.

What these numbers prove is that byu is not an asset to ESPN because of some mythical national following, or because byu is a recognized brand. They provide value to ESPN because they are willing to play on Wed, Thurs, and Fri nights for peanuts. It's just cheap programming for ESPN, nothing more.

ESPN is a pimp and byu is their cheap whore.

byu is ok with this (and I think they should be) because their primary concern isn't money. Its a good setup for both parties. It's just funny after hearing Zoobs claim that ESPN needs them somehow.

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to leftyjace again."

It's always nice to know the facts when so many zoobs like to claim that BYU got a better deal than Utah.

I don't know how to look it up. But it seems to me that the home team shares their "gate" revenue with the visitor and not the conference. Now BYU may be paying less to the POS opponents they are now scheduling but I have a hard time imagining the income is higher than it was for games that mattered against conference opponents.

The difference in the numbers you showed is that only one of those games looks like a sell out.

I haven't heard BYU fans claim that. Or at least not rational ones.

I haven't heard BYU fans claim that. Or at least not rational ones. What BYU fans think that BYU wouldn't have jumped to the Pac-12 also, if they had received an invite like Utah? (assuming no Sunday play, etc.) None that I know.

What I have heard people say, which is still very likely true, is that BYU got a much better deal from ESPN/independence than they had in the Mountain West.

And while I'm posting in this thread, can I just say that I found it very ironic that just a few days after some people (Salty?) were saying here that Utah fans don't really care about the BYU rivalry anymore because only the Pac-12 games are really important, Utah fans stormed the field not once, not twice, but three times in the victory over BYU. Guess a lot of Utah fans still care about the rivalry.
