I do worry that if they see this all the way through that they lose their leverage and the losses on both sides will be fairly catastrophic. If they don't find ways to keep everyone's attention they will lose a part of their influence.

I'm all for players doing whatever they want to do. Everyone has free will.

However, I think NBA players might have a false sense of how much influence they have over our country, culture, and government. A police officer making an extremely bad decision and potentially killing someone isn't going to change because NBA players decided not to play a game.

Any changes NBA players, or the public in general, would like to see regarding police brutality, criminal justice reform, etc. are not going to be solved overnight. There are 300+ million people living together in this country. Police shootings, even unjustified ones, are not going to stop anytime in the near future. The goal should be to minimize and reduce these over time. If NBA players refrain from playing until all unjustified police shootings are eliminated...........they aren't going to be playing during this lifetime.

I think you may be underestimating the power that athletes have. NBA/NFL players could strike until owners pool their hundreds of billions of dollars together to bus people to voting locations, pay for polling station workers, etc. And if the NBA strike leads to a strike of college and NFL players, the economic impact on a lot of cities (especially in "flyover" cities) would be devastating. Imagine if the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks said "we're not playing in Wisconsin anymore" and move elsewhere. According to the Green Bay Press Gazette, the Packers generate over $153 million per year in direct and indirect economic benefit to Brown County. Over 600,000 people go to Green Bay on game days and pour their money into the businesses there.

Imagine if every college team in these small towns does this, where game days fuel their economies. Penn State football brings in over $70 million a year in visitor spending. University of Wisconsin games bring in $16 million per home game and about 70% of revenue for retailers is tied to events and tourism. Where is that going to come from in Madison, Wisconsin without athletes? Same goes for places like Lincoln, Nebraska/Iowa City, Iowa/countless other small cities where college football is the only show in town.

Who are they trying to hurt by cancelling the season? The owners? The fans? Bubble ball was a good platform as the issues were talked about in pregame, on commercials, interviews, etc. All of that will now be gone for reruns of Big Bang Theory. Whatever, it is their decision.

That's why they hopefully take some time before making a decision. They are not thinking of all the kids playing in college, even high school, G league. If the NBA popularity dwindles, thousands of jobs will be eliminated, less scholarships will be given, lots of implications.

I personally think this is all because many of the elite millionaire players are unhappy in the bubble. They aren’t willing to put up with the discomfort they are experiencing personally. I think it’s all a way for them to appear as if they are taking a big moral stance and sacrificing, but it’s really just a selfish act for most of them.
I have a hard time understanding the social justice stance that applies and has so much meaning to these guys in America - but these are the same people that continue to exploit so much about China.
