What's new

Playstation Network Down

I'm not a hard core gamer at all, but I finally took the XBox 360 plunge a few months back pretty much specifically to play Red Dead Redemption.

However the game that I burned through pretty much over the course of a single weekend was Alan Wake, which I found immensely impressive from a story-telling perspective. It's also a game I had never heard of and I only had access to because it was bundled with my system. Totally worthwhile.

Of course now I have no games to play and will probably just hang tight until LA Noire comes out.

You should play the original Portal... you can probably get it for like 15$ in the Orange Box set. THen if you like it you can play portal 2, which came out tuesday.

I don't already know this. I literally know next to nothing about video games.

Why would I like it?
If you like Red Dead, liking Fallout 3 is almost a guarantee. They both emphasize big open-world exploration, with tons and tons of stuff to do. The main differences are in setting and POV: Red Dead is third-person and set in the old west, Fallout 3 is first-person and set in a post-apocalyptic world. Fallout 3 definitely has the kookier sense of humor... society has evaporated, so it's more people giving you odd and kooky things to do than Red Dead, which tries somewhat harder to maintain some illusion of realism in between the humor. Heck, they even both have a similar system of special ability for shooting: Red Dead has Dead-Eye, Fallout 3 has V.A.T.S.

I could spend pages going over similarities and differences, but best you just watch a video review (below). If it looks interesting to you, give it a try. It was released in 2008, and there's been a (less impressive) sequel released since then, so you can get it for really cheap... like 20 bucks. Trust me, I play lots of video games, and this will almost certainly be money well-spent for you.

(BTW, the conversations with Harold the Tree in Fallout 3 are some of the funniest dialogue I've ever seen in video games).

Oh, and one more note sort of technical note: there have been five DLC releases for Fallout 3 that add more missions and storyline and such to the game. If you do end up getting the game, the only one of these that's really essential is Broken Steel, which allows you to explore and do other missions after the main storyline is complete, as opposed to the game just ending after the main story without it, necessitating re-loading a previous save if you want to keep on playing. It also raises the level cap to 30, adds new "perks," and a whole other storyline to play through. The other four pieces of DLC are fine and all, but Broken Steel is the one to get if you don't want to burn your money getting all five of them. It cost 800 MS Points ($10) to download it through the X-Box Live Marketplace when it was first released, but the price may have gone down by now, I dunno.

Yeah basically what AtheistPreacher said Kicky. I just re-read that and my post sounded slightly condescending. I just meant that I figured since you liked Red Dead Redemption you would enjoy Fallout 3. I can't even tell you how many hours I wasted on that and Fallout: New Vegas. I also enjoyed Assassin's Creed purely for the story line, kinda fun to play, gets a little repetitive after a while, but what game doesn't, but the story line is like a movie.

The God of War games had style, but I thought the combat was a little too repetitive. I prefer Devil May Cry 3... or even better, Ninja Gaiden.
GD! we have similar tastes and opinions as far as games, those two (DMC and NG) I thought played very similar. I also thought they would do *may get spelling wrong* of Omnishu since the PS3 came out as that game seemed similar to DMC and NG but then maybe that's why they didn't.

Crazy about PSN though I heard it went down some time on Tue (4/20) and I was on PSN early that day downloading an update for DA2 so I must have caught it just before it happened.

The other thing about DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden vs GoW3 is, of course, the difficulty. GoW3 is part of the new breed of game design that's constructed so most people can beat it with a little dedication and not too much effort. That's not to say that's necessarily a bad thing... Resident Evil 4 actually wasn't overly difficult either with the ability to continue from basically anywhere, but it's one of my favorite games ever.

DMC3 and NG, though... those are just brutal. I keep going back because they'll always be challenging, and I know I can always keep improving. Demon's Souls is actually kind of the ultimate form of that, but I sometimes hesitate to recommend that one, because for some people it seems so hard and unforgiving that it's more like work than fun. But if you buckle down really learn how to play well, it's a consistently amazing experience.

BTW, a great article came out recently about the sequel to Demon's Souls, rather unoriginally titled Dark Souls: https://www.next-gen.biz/features/dark-souls-preview. Unlike Demon's Souls, which was a PS3 exclusive, Dark Souls will also be on X-Box 360. I really can't wait, it looks all kinds of awesome.

Actually, yeah, Assassin's Creed 2 is another good game that shares a lot of similarities with Red Dead Redemption. I can't say I recommend the first Assassin's Creed, I got bored of that one a little too fast... but the second one has a bit more variety, and more missions and such to keep you occupied overall. And like Fallout 3, you can get it for $20 new on Amazon.

GoW3 the graphics and storyline is what I loved. It wasn't a game that spent too much time with a detailed story line. Most of the games on PS3 are ported over from the Xbox. So, they are essentially the same game as the one on the 360. But, games that are just PS3 games like GoW3 show what the system is capable of. The PS3 is a clearly superior machine we just need games that are made for the PS3 over ported 360 games.

I agree. The PS3 hardware is better, and games optimized for it generally beat the 360. But from everything I've heard, it's somewhat harder for developers to make full use of the PS3's hardware versus the 360's... which had a lot to do with Sony downgrading the announced specs just before release. That does tend to create problems when games are ported from the 360 to PS3. Kevin VanOrd talked about some issues with the PS3 Fallout 3 port in the video review I posted... but the real poster-child for this problem was Bayonetta, which had a terrible PS3 port. It had to go to a load screen every time you paused the game and went into a menu. Bad bad bad. (Bayonetta, btw, was made by the same team that made Devil May Cry series, so if you liked DMC, chances are you'll like Bayonetta. I sure did.)

But I love my PS3... way more exclusive titles that I actually care about (Mass Effect 1 and Tales of Vesperia are the only 360 exclusives that matter to me, whereas the PS3 has Demon's Souls, InFamous, Metal Gear Solid 4, Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2, and Disgaea 3). And this weird online outage aside, I like the fact that PSN is free. And of course, it's a blu-ray player. Not to mention it doesn't RROD at the drop of a hat. PS3 all the way.
