Point Guards

I don't want point guard duties(offense and defensive) to fall on DM45, we want him fresh (mentally & physically) to close out games.

@LoPo will now see how blessed we are to have the Rubio

I want DM to get the reps personally. I think his best position is eventually as a PG. Maybe he needs a Pat Beverly to his Harden, but I think a 2 guard who can shoot, defend and handle a little would be fantastic next to DM. DM is a bit undersized defending the wing... got great size for a PG doe.

He can be the PG and not have to run every set each time down the court... especially in our offense. Let's be honest... he already has a lot of creation responsibility. If we are going to get where we want to go he needs to be a scorer and playmaker. Get him reps now and see how far he has to go. Even if he sucks at it for 10-15 games and it costs us some wins.

Agree with Handlogten. DM at the 1 might be ideal, although defending some of the PG's in the West is probably harder than defending SG's.

Jazz would need a SG who can actually shoot, though. That's what wears on Mitchell. He has to shoulder the entire offensive load since Rubio isn't a shooter and Ingles isn't much of a threat lately.

Nah, the Jazz would epic morons to try to make him a PG. Obviously he is going to have to do more of that now, but hopefully they minimize it as much as possible.

Which is why a 2 next to him or Brogdon might be perfect. Shooting is a priority and secondary creation would be fantastic. Defense should at least be adequate. Not easy to find admittedly, but if you expand the search to SGs and PGs there is a slightly bigger talent pool.

I will be interested to see how much better, worse or the same we will be with Donovan and Neto running the point. As a guy with little faith in Rubio making us a contender, I now get to see if lacking Rubio makes us a lottery team.

Well last night I think neto compared favorably to Rubio statistically at least.
29 minutes 4-8 from the field, 2-3 from three, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 foul. I would be happy if Ricky shot those percentages and had those rebounding and assist numbers. Played tough pesky defense too.

Some of you who want DM to be a point guard need to really consider what's going to be needed of him in the coming years. I think it's fine for DM to get good at playing PG for the Jazz and having the ability to do it well, but no way you ever just stick him there permanently. He needs to score and it's what he's best at. I think developing his PG skills is great so that he can do it at times but no way you stick him there. Height wize he's undersized but Donovans arms are very long and he's very strong. He should be at the 2.

If you are talking the rigid definition of a PG then I would somewhat agree... but regardless of who he plays with he is likely the primary creator with the ball in his hand. I don't think he needs a traditional PG next to him. Brogdon isn't a traditional PG but he'd work really well there. Other guys can get players into place and run the offense... doesn't have to come from a pg.

Was listening to Dunc'd on podcast.. they were talking about how Harden has seen every defense so many times that he is just a savant with passing and reading things... getting DM those reps pays off later in his career. Don't need to go to that extreme, but I don't get the value of having another ball dominant pg next to him unless that guy is a better scorer/creator than DM. Getting a guy like Kemba would be great but then there are defensive issues as both guys are undersized. If we open our mind a bit on position it gets easier to find personnel that will maximize his talent.

So how exactly does it work if a player is on a 2-way with another team and we'd want him on our squad? Do we just have to wait out the deal, does a trade have to happen, or can we just give him an offer? Was just looking through g-league guys and wondering about it.

Weber seems like the best PG we could get and I don't believe it's an issue there, not sure he's actually solid enough for it to we worthwhile, but among other guys Chris Boucher looked fairly interesting (much more so than a guy like Bennett) and he is on a 2-way with the Raptors.

Scoring point guards are a thing though. Dame, Steph, Russ, harden, etc etc.

Not the worst thing in the world for your point guard to be a scorer
