PoS fan who harassed Westbrook

I'm guessing that was an over reaction after not reacting to the stuff they should have.
From what I was told by the guy at the game it's a rule. Maybe it doesn't get enforced all the time or something, but a rule still.

I remember being involved in a chant vs Houston that went "Scola's greasy, clap clap clap clap clap, Scola's greasy"

That might get a fan in trouble though nowadays as it might be seen as going after his race or culture (Italians). Might cross the line. I really don't know.

Wait, Scola is Argentinian rather than italian I think. I'm not sure I guess.

I remember when heckling was considered an art form - where people actually gave it some thought and didn't resort to low blows and worse - racially tinged insults. Now it's become the equivalent of hurling vegetables at the performer.
"We want a pitcher, not a belly-itcher!"

That one was great. Ahh the good old days!

Dude, sometimes they are just greasy. By the way do you say "grease-y" or "greezy"?

From the fan's Facebook, etc. he obviously associates with racists and bigots, thus our perception becomes reality, whether or not that is fair. If he yelled racist, disparaging, inappropriate remarks toward Westbrook then he deserves a severe punishment, especially from the Jazz and should potentially experience legal repercussions.
However, I also think Westbrook should be punished for his display because technically he threatened to harm people which is a crime. As far as I can tell, the only thing we have proof of is his (Westbrook's) crime. I always tell my kids they had better be ready to take it if they're going to dish it out and if Westbrook is going to make an example of this guy, right or wrong, he'd better be willing to accept the consequences of his actions as well.
The number of people coming to the fans' defense and justifying their actions, if anything, further gives value to the multiple accusations from various players over the years regarding treatment from our fans. Where there is smoke there is usually fire. To now shift the conversation to Westbrook and his reaction takes away from the issue at hand and the conversation being had by the entire league regarding our fanbase.

If they did indeed say something to the effect of "get on your knees" than that is unacceptable and disgusting behavior. It's a racist remark that is meant to be racist and anyone who believes otherwise is delusional and ignorant. I'm all for heckling and getting into fan-mode but there is a line you don't cross. I think Westbrook crossed the line too with the wife remark but it sounds like both husband and wife were in on it.

I don’t think anyone is justifying anyone’s actions in the scenario. Both parties were in the wrong if what the fan said is what Westbrook and/or others describe. However, if Westbrook misheard what was said then he looks foolish. Either way, there is evidence of Westbrook committing a crime, everything about the fan and what was said is hearsay, thus far.

Why do you think that is?

Are you suggesting that there is some sort of agenda against the state of Utah? That black athletes are more likely to make accusations against a predominantly white fanbase?

Yes, there are belligerent fans throughout the league. Racists even. Yet here we are yet again where the accusations are specifically lobbied against some of our fans.

Two of our fans. Honestly it’s not an agenda against Utah, but people believing stereotypes about Utah, which likely originate with LDS Church history.

So did he say ice your knees or get down on your knees? Any confirmation on what was said? Don’t they conduct interviews of people that were sitting around this guy?

I don't know if the fan said what he said or not. The Jazz should interview everyone around and find out. If he said anything out of line then ban him. but Westbrook was out of line as well. There is NOTHING racist about what was said, and he hid behind the race card to deflect from the fact that he has thin skin and overreacted. He hears something wrong, then tell the security and have them deal with it.

I actually agree that the knees remarks were more likely homophobic than explicitly racist. But here's the thing. As a white person, I don't get to decide what counts as racist against black people and what doesn't. To deny that the remark could be understood in a racist way is to be ignorant of the perceptions and experiences of many black people in America. A white man berating a black man with commands about kneeling down (and using language like "acting a fool") can easily be understood in racial terms to anyone who is familiar with the history of slavery and race relations in the United States. And you don't get to decide what counts as racist against black people and what doesn't.

Shouldn’t the first step be determining what really happened? If this fan or fans broke the code of conduct, then appropriate steps can be taken. If Westbrook broke code of conduct, then fines or suspension may be in order.

But to paint an entire fan base with a racism claim doesn't fly. There are jerks, bigots and racists in every state. I’ve lived in Oklahoma. Trust me, they have their share, too.
