Potential Trade Possibilities

Now that Don is running the offense while Conley spots up, its only a matter of time before we look at what we can get for Conley. We need a better defender in the lineup with Don. Conley, and especially his contract, represents our last expendable asset.

We need to wait until around the deadline. Conley is great injury insurance, and helps us in the grind of a season. We also need to wait to see who becomes available. Who gets disgruntled or is surplus to requirements.

Guys I'm monitoring:

Rozier and Zeller
Tobias Harris
Aaron Gordon and Fournier
Blake Griffin
Harrison Barnes and Cory Joseph
Bledsoe and JJ Redick
Julius Randle and Ntilikina

If we trade Conley, we need to get an asset that helps more than just this year. We are that low on assets for future growth.

Rozier would certainly be interesting. He’s only got 2 years left. I like his intensity. Looks like he bumped his three point shooting on high volume. I’d probably pull the trigger on that.

Tobias isn’t an upgrade on D. He’s just taller. I’d probably pass on that.

Gordon and Fournier is interesting. I’m a little lukewarm on both. If you had the former’s defense with the latter’s offense, I’d say yes. Gordon would give us a size and physique that we don’t have, but I’m not sure I’d really want him on the floor that much. If he was used situationally then maybe.

Griffin is a big no. Not an upgrade defensively.

Barnes’ contract runs 3 more years and not sure I’m excited about that. I’ve never been too high on him. I don’t know much about his defense, though. He’d be more of a question mark that I’d have to look more at.

Bledsoe and Reddick is very interesting. I’m big on Reddick (wanted him since draft). Bledsoe has a reputation for being tough and a defender. But I haven’t paid attention so I’m really just reporting reputation. Not an amazing outside shooter but not Rubio. Contract is longer than I’d like (3 more years) but certainly an interesting concept.

Randle and Franky Smokes. How does this help on D? Hard pass.

I was just spitballing... and you make some good points.

Rozier - maybe Charlotte is content moving forward with Ball and Graham as PG options. Conley lets them shed some cap.

Tobias is also an "meh" from me. He helps us more than Conley but the price tag is huge. Maybe 3rd team?

Gordon and Fournier would cost us draft assets too, but if we added them at the deadline, holy cow we're stacked for a run.

Griffin all depends on 1 - how is he looking and 2 - what else does Detroit give. I think Griffin helps us more than Conley.

That Barnes deal is a stretch I agree. That's more of a 3 team deal where Sac sheds Barnes and we get something. Charlotte?

Bledsoe and Redick makes some sense. If NOLA isn't in the playoff picture at the deadline, I could see them trading these vets.

Randle and Frank is about us avoiding the luxury this year, and NY saving $4 million next year. And we would have the bird rights for Frank should we want to keep him long term. I would prefer that we move Randle to a 3rd team.

Actually, the trade of Conley for OPJ make a lot of sense

Saves the Jazz 6 million and puts us under the cap. Chicago gets a mentor for White. I would guess Chicago would want some draft considerations also sense they are saving the Jazz a ton of money.

I do not think we should entrust the bench to Harrison/Clarkson on a nightly basis.

Well the logic of signing Rudy to such a big deal was to maximize the window. Put the best team out there. With the contracts signed this year and last, we have very few ways to improve the roster. If Conley doesn't fit, we have to use his large expiring to add if we can since we have limited options elsewhere.

A trade that allows us to miss the luxury this year might give us some incentive to spend a bit more next year and possibly the year after. By 21-22, hopefully we are back to full stadiums and a larger luxury cost might be worth it.

I just don't think we can allow Mike to expire and walk for nothing. Maximize every asset.

I realize Mike isn't good defensively anymore but swapping him for Rozier doesn't make us meaningfully better. Bledsoe does but he has his own injury concerns and the shooting is a problem. I think he becomes a 15-20 minute guy in the playoffs... I think I can get 15 minutes out of Shaq and keep Mike and be better off this year in the playoffs. Creation gets a little harder and having Mike is beneficial.

I see that argument. It makes sense. Conley may be more important come playoff time.

I also see the value in avoiding the luxury this year. By avoiding the luxury this year, we stand to save a ton next year by avoiding the repeater tax. And if we lose Conley for nothing in the summer, that's a lost asset.
