This is the most excited I have been about an upcoming Jazz season since the late 1990's. People here in Alabama are coming up to me at work, church, and in the neighborhood to talk about the Jazz. Something is happening...

Just a cursory glance shows Livingston, Iguodala, Cousins, Bogut on the team right now. In the past they have had David Lee, Leandro Barbosa, McGee, Pachulia, Clark (who turned into a 3-pt machine while he was there), Nick young. Yeah, not a boat-load of A-listers off the bench, but a few just past their prime, and sure some projects as well, but always with fully serviceable and experienced veteran role-players for depth. We are pinning our hopes of depth on Mudiay, Green, Exum and 4 2nd-rounders drafted this year. Not exactly the same.

Que?

Our depth is Joe Ingles, Royce O'Neale, Dante Exum, Ed Davis, Georges Niang, Mudiay, Brantley, and probably another FA.

That's pretty solid depth, my man.

Bojan is more explosive than Joe. Ed Davis is one of the leagues best rebounders so don't worry too much

My main question is if Bojan and Joe can coexist, especially against bigger and more athletic teams. Ball handling, passing, shooting, for sure. The rest? We’re going to miss Favors setting picks and rolling, his d, the occasional jumper, etc. Green and Davis can probably offset some of that, I just need to see it in action.

Yeah Davis can rebound and play D. Can he contribute anything on offense? (Maybe he doesn’t have to, not sure.) He’s also a terrible free throw shooter and I don’t know if he adds much on offense.

Favors didn’t have a complete game, but he wasn’t terrible at anything. You can rely on the guy, he won’t really hurt you. And of course he’s excellent Gobert insurance-now if Rudy goes down we have Davis and Bradley and that’s it. We’ll miss him against the Nuggets, OKC, and the Lakers, with or without Kawhi. I will say Bojan helps us more against Houston who I still see as the biggest roadblock.

that’s my reasoning for a B. I get why they went this direction; I just don’t see it as a grand slam quite yet.

Those of you worried about Conley leaving. Even if he does, we’ll have a lot of cap room, and have choices out there. Lowry and a few other point guards are free agents as well.

And we’d still have a great core here.

Utah quite literally was a preferred FA destination this off-season.

Why?

Donovan Mitchell and Quin Snyder. Thanks DL!

If your expectation is to be getting LeBron, Kawhi, etc etc, that's just unrealistic, tbh. Donovan is our best shot at getting those sorts of players though. So again, thanks DL.
Which free agents? 2? Vet minimums with checkered pasts? Ok yeah, that's exactly the same. Obvi you don't pay attention to the rest of the league.

Davis doesn't have much of a jumper but he can drive dunk do put backs and such

What are you talking about?

Tobias Harris wanted to come to Utah.
Bobby Portis wanted to come to Utah.

Once Bogdonavich heard we were heavily interested, he really wanted to come.

Jeff Green came here bc he wants to win a championship.

Jared Dudley wanted to come here for the same reason.

Those are all good, solid veteran players that wanted to come to Utah. Are they elite stars? No. We're not going to attract those. We never have. Utah had two HOF players for damn near two decades and still wasn't a FA destination. Utah is now, for the majority of players.

But hey, you pay attention. What would have made you happy?

C-

Jazz gave up a lot for potentially only one year of Conley. I think the risk he opts out and the Jazz are forced to either a) lose him or b) sign him to a big 4-year deal is understated. If you assume AD stays in LA, Conley & Draymond look to be the best potential UFAs in the 2020 class. If he has a good year, there's very little reason for Conley not to opt out and trade some 2020-21 salary for much more $$ long-term.

The advanced metrics don't like Bojan. The BBIndex guy had the Jazz w/52 wins w/Favors and 48 w/Bojan. I get the idea that you can find 80% of Favors (Davis) more cheaply than you find a high quality stretch 4, and I understand there are fit issues w/Derrick next to Gobert. Still, I think the contract is poor value, and it's hard for me to picture a frontcourt with the athleticism of Bojan/Ingles advancing super deep into the playoffs.

I think Green and especially Davis were good pickups. I guess there's something to be said for mixing things up and taking a shot, but I suspect the Jazz will bow out in Round 2. They haven't done anything franchise crippling, but they've sacrificed some long-term assets and flexibility and not greatly enhanced their chances of winning the West, imo.

Hope I'm wrong.
Can advanced metrics account for team fit? Don't think so. I just think we are much better off with more shooting than favors with Rudy.

Big name FA's? Yeah, we might never get those.

But we have stars in Mitchell and Gobert. We were able to bring in a very good FA in Bogdonavich, and a good vet min signing in Green. Those probably don't happen without Conley. Those signing matter a lot too.

We definitely don’t get Green (atleast for the minimum) without Conley. His relationship with him is a big reason why he signed here.
