Raul Neto re-signed

The one thing Exum shouldn't do is a 1-year deal. Next year's cap bump is not going to go as far as some people think, especially when you consider how many players signed 1-year deals this year.

Is NAOS really dead?
Yep.

Wasted money...3rd string point guard should be a minimum contract, the extra money could be put to better use...the Jazz have over paid each of their own free agents this off season. Very disappointing off season in my opinion.

Neto and Favors have outs after this year, so it doesn't matter. Exum is the one that concerns me.

How could his money be used better? We are over the cap, we can't spend that money on any other player this year. So it's just a few extra bucks from the Millers pockets. Not sure why anyone cares about that.

But mah takin’ a swing at a big name

I get what everyone is saying but I still don't get the point as far as big picture is concerned. I couldn't care less about saving the Millers money. Yes, we are an over the cap team, but if we don't over spend on Favors at least 3 million too much, exum 2 million, Neto contract, guarantee thabo, who knows. I'm just saying in this tight market money could have been better spent.

The loyalty argument sucks too, I'd love to see a player be loyal to the jazz. Instead of us having to overpay to keep our own free agents. There's no way these guys get anywhere close to the contracts the jazz paid them from anyone else this summer...Durant takes less and the warriors end up with cousins or previously igudola...sad summer as a jazz fan, oh but we can offer max next summer, but it'll probably have to go to rubio so we can keep him, gotta over pay our own right?

Your math doesn't work. When you're over the cap, it doesn't matter if you're $.01 over or $20M over. You don't have money to offer free agents. You only have your exceptions, which Utah still has. The only way for Utah to have gotten significantly under to sign a FA was to have, in some combination, renounced Favors, Exum, all the non-guaranteed players and trade Burks. And they would have also had to renounce their exceptions. Dumping Burks probably would have required Utah to give up a 1st. I'm sure they would have done that to give George $30M.

But other than that, keeping Favors and Exum was the best scenario. Neto's contract is really meaningless. Jazz can still use all or part of the MLE while staying under tax, simply by not keeping Udoh and Jerebko. Then the 15th contract, if the Jazz choose to use it, is someone like Niang.

The smart play, IMO, is to keep Burks, Thabo (which they did), and at least one of Udoh or Jerebko. Those four give the Jazz $24m in expiring contracts. Favors and Neto are also TO's, I believe for year 2. Not including those because I doubt the Jazz trade them. But the others are very expendable in a trade at the deadline. Teams are going to be looking to trade good vets in advance of free agency. Love would be easily obtainable, for example. Not that I think he's the player Utah should pursue, but that's a possibility. Or Utah lets all those contracts expire to see if there's a FA who has interest in Utah. I doubt a top-tier FA wants to sign with the Jazz, though. That's why I'm hoping for a deadline trade.

I get all that, but with the Jazz paying more to their own free agents, the Jazz are less likely to use their exceptions - where as if they spend 5 million less in combination on those contracts they'd be willing to use their exception money. I could be wrong and we'll see an 8 million contract thrown out to a player, but I think they are done. Like you said these contracts are all in play for the trade deadline which is a very nice possibility, because we will not be able to sign a top tier player with max space, they just won't come here.

And I know if the team had been healthy all year this is closer to 55 - 60 win team last year. So I am fine with coming back with the same club, I was just hoping to add a little to it. Fingers crossed that the Jazz will throw out a mid level deal and upgrade the contract.
