Rayjon Traded to Cleveland for $$$

We are looking at a repeater tax in 2 years if we keep Rudy. Ducking the tax this year would be smart... easier to do if you squeeze JC and Favs a bit... trading Mike for someone is the easiest way to do it.
we are doing this the dumb way. just trade conley then i'm sure we'll be able to keep all of our money/picks. or had we negotiated our deal with Bojan/Ingles a bit smarter as opposed to the deal we are giving them that pays them more as they get older......

I'm not going to begrudge not squeezing JC and Favs in order to save a 2027 2nd-round pick if it means we set the clock back on the repeater tax. I'd rather keep them happy. Those picks are easy enough to get, if needed.

We can scream that we just need to trade Conley in order to avoid the money issues at the tops of our lungs, but we're not changing the Jazz's mind. And they may turn out to be right. OP is more of a risk than MC (even if he's available, which nobody knows), and I'll sure take a year of him over that 2027 2nd rounder + Tucker.

how much do we have to pay the tax? it'd better not be less than the money we have to pay to get those second rounders back in the future

If we're doing this to avoid the luxury tax this year, it makes all kind of sense. That way we don't start the repeater clock at least for another year, which can turn into very serious money down the line.

It's not this coming year's tax that's the issue.

the cure cannot be worse than the disease itself is all i'm saying. we gave away 5 picks that we could easily swap for $$$$$$ down the road just to avoid the tax $$$$$. now we are heading towards a COVID season where a mass infection could cut your roster in half at any moment with only 13 active players including Niang, Oni and two rookies. it's like quitting your job, cutting all of your connections with outside world to stay in the basement for a year just so you won't get COVID.

Yeah we are just running up a tab though... it’s like one credit card ain’t so bad... 5 or 6 though and it’s starts to get bad.

2nd round picks can be bought... with MONEY.

why are we giving away those second round picks right now? SAVING MONEY.

so you give away money to save money. makes perfect sense. plus i'm sure "when the time comes", the price on 2nd draft picks will be much higher than the money we supposedly just saved.

AND I have serious doubts about the jazz being a good team in the long run as we currently have little to no solution for the moment when Ingles/Bojan/Conley runs out of gas. heck, it's not even known if rudy's gonna be here past 2021. it could've been picks in the 30s that we are giving up
Luxury tax has repeater actions. It's smart to avoid the tax when you can so you dont start that clock. Getting out of the tax now might save you tens of millions down the line if you pay the tax later.

Running up a tab is often needed for teams that feel like they're contenders (whether you feel like we're contenders, or whether we've run up the tab on the right stuff is a separate issue, of course). At least we're not where the Clips and Lakers are in terms of future assets.

i understand that. but there are much better ways to do this than what we just did. teams pays millions of dollars for second rounders on draft night. who is to say the picks we just gave away won't worth tens of millions of $ on its own?

in 2027 joe/conley are both 40yr old, Bojan 38, Favs 36, rudy 35. it's gonna be a complete different jazz team as far as salary is concerned. So many things can happen between now and then. and doors that can lead us to avoid the tax anytime down the road. but right now we are going all in on what potentially could be a very dangerous path.

We’ve been moaning about DL, but some of this stuff is starting to look more and more like it’s the machinations of new ownership.
Could be. I think you're right in the sense that there's not a single person we can point to for moves like this, though we always want to put someone's name on it.

I frankly don't find the effort to get out of this year's tax (if that's indeed what it is) to be very surprising (or even out-of-character compared to what we've seen in the past). If you're that close, there's every reason to get below it.
