It turns out "the giraffe's stretched neck" can be passed on genetically. Parents can activate genes and pass them on in the activated form. The genes can be turned off over time, but it appears harder to turn them off than on.

Some people are more susceptible to alcoholism, and in varying levels of susceptibility. Native Americans have the stigma for a reason. If you have an alcoholic parent then it's best you don't drink.

that just means you inheritted the weakness gene, the "i gotta make an excuse for my weakness" gene

I am not arguing that alcoholism is not a disease or that is doesn't have a genetic component. But to compare it to cancer is simply ludicrous. Don't drink. Ever. You will NOT get alcoholism. Cancer and other diseases do not work that way. There are things you can do that make you more susceptible to cancer, but often it just happens. Trust me, I am a cancer survivor (osteosarcoma) and my particular cancer had neither a genetic component nor environmental factors. It is one of the "mistake" cancers, as in rapid cell division resulted in a mistake during mitosis that became cancer. And I have alcoholics in my family. I have seen them both up close and personal. They are not even close to the same.

That just means you're a recovering alcoholic. duh

You can't recover from a disease you never had. If you do not drink, you cannot become an alcoholic, therefore, no need to recover. DUH!!!
