Romney Fundraiser - Secret Taping

Everyone except complete degenerate ****ing idiots would still be rich. But Romney was able to take his opportunity and turn it into something. I disagree with the idea that most people would see the same level of success Mitt has had, largely because there are a lot of millionaire children that don't end up running huge investment capital firms or becoming governors. Whether I agree with how he ran his business or his governorship or not. But he took his opportunity and ran with it which, again, is still more than a lot of people do at similar, greater, or lesser levels.

Of course that is not to say if he was born in a middle-class family or lower his fate would be even similar and I definitely contend that it would be basically anything but. Like the vast majority of the rest of us.

The stats on class mobility would support my original statement.

Romney was born a millionaire and has maintained that.

Just as most of that 47 % who he despises would have maintained or added upon their own wealth. They may not have followed suite with being governor, Presidential Candidate, etc. but they would have found ways to either maintain or add upon their wealth. Stats show that.

Again, it's easy to steal home when you start out on 3rd base. Had romney done this while his dad suffered a horrific death for lack of health insurance, his mom worked 3 jobs to make ends meet, without a free college education, etc I would bow to his "work ethic."

Instead, I laugh when he attempts to relate to "joe sixpack."

So you're saying that Millions of Americans would be squeaky clean, boring rich stiffs who had been a Govenor and running for president? Sorry PKM I can't agree. Maybe you deal with a higher level of person than I do, but my experience with people tells me that the vast majority would not be willing to do what Mitt has done, and would therefore not find themselves where he is today. Some would. Most would not.

For that same reason I believe Mitt would rise, just as many others have, regardless of the obstacles they faced or position they were born to. Maybe not rise as high, maybe it would be harder, but some people are just able to achieve and lead. I'm okay with that, and I'm okay that I'm not Mitt or PKM or whomever your favorite overachiever is. Life isn't fair, and nobody can make it fair. The sooner a person comes to term with that the sooner they will find serenity.

You misunderstood. I said that most people born into wealth will remain wealthy. I disagreed that Mitt wouldn't be able to be successful if he hadn't be born into privilege.
I never made any reply as to whether the average person would aspire to Mitt's level

To be clear, I think Mitt is exceptionally driven, very smart, savvy, and would find a way to rise to the top regardless.

We're cool, it was my bad.

What's interesting to me is that I was not born into money, had no help along the way, have no college degree, yet still identify with Mitt very well ..
MUCH more than I get Obama.

Out of curiosity, have you ever read the book "Black Like Me?"

who here has read it?

I think gaining some background knowledge on some of the lazy arses who are ruining this country...

I'm still not convinced you are not a made up alias. And I mean that in the nicest way.

Just because someone made lots of money does not prove that they did good things.
How do the Christian Right reconcile this attitude with the whole camel/needle thing?

There is a great documentary about the descendants of a slave trading family from the northeast, their history and their current positions in society; the Dewolfs of Rhode Island I think.
I highly recommend it. You might find it on a PBS website.

I agree. Speaking for myself, I started my business career with a screw everyone, I'm gonna get mine, mentality. After several years I softened, a little.

As I got older I wanted to see good things happen for others more than for myself. Granted, I didn't need it anymore.
Still, not many people became ultra successful without leaving a bit of wreckage in their wake.
