Rondo on the Jazz

I think Rondo would improve this team's toughness and defense, no question. I do worry about his contract, it's a bit high. His shooting is a problem but how much does he really need to shoot? He's so good at getting into the passing lanes and around people that his floaters are all he needs. Perhaps Hornacek can help make him respectable, like he's done with the other players he's worked with?

I like Rondo on the Jazz but his contract might be in the wrong direction of this team. Maybe as a help for a couple years while our young guys develop? Although, Hayward has some of the same abilities. We might be better served with a better outside shooting PG and instead let Hayward drive-and-dish. Hayward really does make good decisions with the ball. Although, a vet like Rondo could still help with mentoring. Tough call.

I think if the Jazz are going to do something big before the season it is to go get Rondo. He experienced enough to help the young guys, but still young enough to be there when we are ready to compete.

I like Hayward, but surely you didn't just say he has the same ability, as Rondo, to knife into the lane and make the pass. No. His contract his high, but not by a lot in my opinion. We have all the pieces (but everyone listen up) .. the PG's in the next THREE drafts that are championship quality are less than three, total .. promise.

If we have the ability to pick up an elite PG, do it. 3's, 4's, and 5's are going to much easier to come by (in the next couple years) than PG's and SG's .. especially PG's.

You're a smart man.

I completely agree with you 100% Kane. Imagine having that lineup for the 2011 season and then drafting Bradley Beal and Michael Gilchrist in the 2012 draft. We would easily be a championship contender for the next three years. Beal adds the deep threat of Ray Allen and Gilchrist adds the toughness of Gerald Wallace at the 2 and 3. Then for the 2012 season, Okur and Watson leave as free agents. We can add a third string PG and veteran center. Imagine the following lineup for the next 3-5 years:

PG: Rondo (35), Burks (11), Free Agent (2)
SG: Burks (18), Beal (24), Hayward (6)
SF: Gilchrist (30), Hayward (16)
PF: Favors (30), Millsap (16)
C: Kanter (36), Free Agent (12)

We could easily contend in 3 years.

Easily? We have no idea how well Favors, Kanter, Burks and Hayward will develop and don't even have Beal or Kidd-Gilchrist let alone know how well their game will translate at the NBA level.

Curious what ya'll would think of cutting the Celts out of the deal and us getting Chris Paul for Harris and Millsap...

Chris Paul would be better but he's a bit fragile and plus he's buds with Deron. I remember him tweeting something like "fail" or something lame like that when we traded Deron. Plus, he's been rumored to like NY, LA and another, I forget. He was in NY helping Melo for some charity thing this past weekend so take that for what it's worth.

CP3 and the other entitled superstars only want to play on all-star teams. No need to work hard to build a team that plays like a team, just ride the coattails.

Not the same speed, that's for sure. I just think if we're thinking long-term, then we should consider what we have and compliment that with trades. I really do like Hayward running Point-Forward. That would mean changing the offense a little, but I think it would work. Obviously, Rondo would be better now. He's also much more expensive and possibly a bit much to handle. Perhaps we can get someone similiar to Rondo but thru a trade on draft day? Who are those PGs you speak of?

Actually I said there aren't any. Not this next draft nor the draft after .. after that, there's one. PG's are drying up, seriously.

I'm in. Rondo is awesome and has not hit his peak. This is one of the few exceptions I could think of to my general reluctance to part with assets right now. Not much I wouldn't give up for him. They can't have Hayward, Burks, Favors or Kanter but just about anything else is game. I would probably not want to give up Sap either.

I would love to see this team's effort with this guy at the wheel. Elite vet PG to run the show and see how fast we get good.

Thank you. Another fan that gets it. Rep'd.

Thanks for the kind words, Jazzfanz :) I agree with Brown Notes that we should hang on to Favors, Burks, Hayward, and Kanter. I think Boston wants to compete for a title in the next year or two, so our needs and their needs should not be mutually exclusive. They have a hole at center since trading Perkins... give them Big Al. They will need a point guard to replace Rondo... give them Harris. With Harris/Allen/Pierce/Garnett/Jefferson starting and Big Baby and Jeff Green playing key roles off the bench, they can make one or two more real runs at a ring. Meanwhile, Rondo can run our team for the next decade, using his playmaking/passing skills and leadership/intensity to help our young core meld into a title contender over time.

I agree about not trading away Hword, Burks, Favors, Kanter or Sap. Anyone else is game. AJ, CJ, and Harris are all on the block IMHO, and I feel like we can net a really solid starting guard with that. I really like Harris, but I am not sure he has what it takes to take this team where it needs to go in the coming years. I would also hate to lose Watson, I feel he is the best backup PG in the league. With Rondo and Watson at the point........oh boy......

I thought that same thing when i read this. rondo on the Jazz would be quite amazing but i dont c how it will get done. Harris, gs pick for rondo and bostons pick from this past draft? The gs pick might be great or middle of the pack its a gamble, but rondo leading the jazz with the poss future core burks, haywar, favors, kanter plus whatever assets we get for millsap, memo, and jefferson

... and far less redundant. Most 'round here are in love with Burks, Hayward, and Favors .. those are the BPA positions in the next TWO drafts.

Often, the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.

I do think the Jazz need a floor general like Rondo. He is confident, outspoken, and would take pressure off the young guys having to do too much especially in crunch time. Harris, while talented, does not have the leadership qualities of Rondo. Also Rondo is considered the 1st or 2nd best defending PG in the league. That's pretty important considering it's a PG driven league now and we will be facing an elite point guard nearly every other game. Would Rondo want to be part of a rebuilding scheme? That would be the most important factor to discuss before considering trading for him.

Ugh, Rondo is my least favourite type of player. The kind with a skill at an elite level and glaring holes in other parts of his game. Which is not to say I wouldn't want him on the Jazz. Just not at 10 million a year.
