Rookie Contract Power Rankings

3 and 4 for me….which is probably still higher than expectation based on their draft positions.

6/7 being NBA rotation players would be a hell of a draft record.

At the moment, I think the Jazz are excited by Keyonte and Cody's potential, and they're intrigued by Flip and Brice. I could see Walker, Taylor and Isaiah get moved at some point. All of these guys are rotational, but Collier could be on the bubble if he doesn't improve his shooting. The combination of limited shooting and limited rim finishing could hurt his prospects for a 2nd contract, imo.

This stat means nothing, but here are our rookie contract +/- leaders for the preseason:
Collier +5.5
Kessler +2.7
George +2.0
Williams +0.5
Flip + 0.4
Brice +0.2
Hendricks -6.0

Normal caveats apply, such as limited sample size, blow-out win over New Zealand, and lack of apples-to-apples data due to varying lineups.

Ok, November is here and I'm going to update my rankings...

1. Walker Kessler
2. Keyonte George
3. Kyle Filipowski
4. Cody Williams
5. Brice Sensabaugh
6. Isaiah Collier

Not Ranked: Taylor Hendricks (due to injury)

I feel like I have to give Walker the #1 spot by default because he's the only clear cut starting level player currently.

I have Keyonte #2 because I still believe the struggles are due to playing a new position and without much talent/experience around him. In the debate of trying to be competitive vs straight tanking, I could see Keyonte being a casualty of the extreme tank. Dude would greatly benefit from having a starting caliber combo or PG next to him.

A positive for Keyonte is that I have liked some of his rim attacking. Seeing flashes of a more athletic/dynamic attacker. I think he really needs to embrace that and continue to learn how to attack the rim without a screen, and use that to make plays.

Filipowski is #3 and rising. The talent is just immense. He already looks somewhat comfortable. That being said, he has mostly played against scrubs in his minutes. I'm hoping the Jazz start running more offense through him as he really is the best passer on the team.

Cody is #4 and falling. I think Cody is currently the main reason the team looks awful. When he's on the court the Jazz are playing 4 on 5 in the half-court offense. The Jazz are trying to make him a corner 3pt shooter because he basically cant do anything else. I watched some Colorado Cody highlights at halftime just to remind myself he isnt trash. It was crazy how much faster he looked in college vs now. Still think he's thinking a lot out there which is slowing him down. It might be months before we see any improvement. He's a long ways away, but I havent given up.

Brice is #5. He actually looks competent on offense. At some point I think he should be given a shot at starting over Cody and getting more minutes just so the offense can have a chance at being functional.

Collier is #6 because he hasnt played yet.

Hendricks wont be ranked because of the injury :(

For whatever reason I just can't quit believing that there is something special there in keyonte.
My eyes just tell me he should be really good.
He is so young. I like that hardy keeps feeding him minutes and touches.
If he continues to fall then oh well, tank on. I still think he will get there though. Maybe not this year but eventually.

Same rankings for me. Obviously a lot will change in the coming future, but Kessler deserves that number one spot right now just based on his floor. I’m 99% sure Kessler will be a long term player and there’s a good chance he’s a long term starter. He may not have the highest potential, but that counts for something.

The others need to prove they are NBA rotation players still. I think Hardy had a quote basically saying these guys need to understand they are fighting for their careers. I’ll try to post it later. Nobody else besides Kessler has truly established themselves as an NBA player yet.

Probably too soon to drop Key below anyone else though. He’s been horrific, but we know he’s at least capable of playing better than he is now.

This is Hardy's quote, via @andylarsen. The only rookie contract player who has truly established himself as an NBA player is Walker Kessler.

“This is not guaranteed. Being in the NBA is not guaranteed. There’s a lot of players who have established themselves, but they’ve had to fight to do so. You have to scratch and claw and battle to be an NBA player for a long time. I think the average NBA career is like under four years or something, and that’s because the league will just churn players in and out,” he said. “And right now, I just don’t feel that desperation. I don’t feel that hunger on every play.”

Back in the day I could have used this as a template for Trey Burke.

Not me. Trey was always too small, not athletic enough and his shooting form was ugly.

I never thought he would be any good and was pissed when we drafted him.

In terms of their ability to actually be good in the NBA:
1. Kessler
2. George
3. Hendricks
4. Cody
5. Flip
6. Collier
7. Sensabaugh

- Filipowski has a lot of potential, from shooting, to playmaking, to beating bigs off the dribble, while holding up defensively on the perimeter. He needs some time to put it all together, but he could be similar to Al Horford.
Horford was an All-Star, all NBA defense, and DPOY candidate. Flip will always be a defensive liability

You're right of course. I was completely mistaken on TB.
Just in case, I wasn't trying to imply in any way that George will have TB kind of career.
Obviously KG is far more talented and has a chance to have a pretty nice NBA career.
My only concern with KG is the way the Jazz is trying to use his game. I don't see a true PG in him.

I don't see why you all seem to be so down on Brice. He's shooting 46% total, 45% from 3 on the year, his court vision, at least to my eye, is great (passes really well), and he's not Cody or Juzang level bad at defense.

I've got:

Kessler,
Sensabaugh,
Flip,
Collier / Keyante**,
Hendricks,
Cody

** I really liked what I saw from Collier before he was injured, and I don't like George's seemingly constant whiney attitude

But that's the thing. In college, Lauri looked like he had a legit low post game. He doesn't in the NBA.

Cody looked faster at Colorado because everyone else was slower. That's why you never draft guys based on how they look compared to NCAA players. You draft them based on their perceived ability to take their game to another level when the competition gets 10 times tougher.

Sometimes it's easy to see early on that a guy has that extra gear. Sometimes it comes out of nowhere when they get in the pros, like the NBA game just suits them a lot better.

Cody isn't in either category. He was a pretty nice college player who inexplicably got drafted at #10 because his bro is good.

He got drafted 10 because the draft was weak.

Kessler is the only one who's shown anything. Flip looks interesting and I think he has potential. I liked Hendricks last year, so we'll see how he looks this season.

Sensabaugh has definitely played well. I think things go poorly when he does too much ball handling, but he looks the part of a functional rotation player.

I dont really see why he isnt starting over Cody. If he was getting the shots Cody was getting with the starters, the offense would be a lot more functional.
