What's new

Shaq

Yeah, seems like it's possible we won't be avoiding the luxury tax and we won't be starting the season with fewer players just to avoid the tax. Now we might make some move later that gets us under, but at the very least it looks like the new owner is open to spending some extra money to fortify the 10-12th spots on the roster... I still hate the combo of Favors+Azubuike as the combination that took away our two best assets to improving the team.

This makes the Tucker move extra puzzling. It barely saved any tax money...but whatever. I'm glad that Harrison is here and the new owner is not skimping out. Not my money :)

Just a money saver... nothing more to see there. I think they also got cash in that deal so it was more than just the 300k in salary plus the tax saved. I think it makes more sense now as we weren’t going to get all the way under the tax without a bigger trade anyway... that is still on the table... maybe even more so now... say Shaq and Oni are both ready and they feel they can comfortably trade Mike or Royce or someone with a bigger salary.

Once you hit the tax no need shaving a million or two around the edges... in for a Penny... in for a pound.

I don't know but it would sure make his extension kinda not great.
Royce is still an established nba wing and his contract would be very movable. I mean if Jerami Grant can get 20M a year Royce at 8M ain’t no big deal.

I really wish someone would get nitty and gritty into the financials to see what the Tucker move is suppose to signal or if it really just was the cheapest move of all time.

so maybe i'm wrong about this guy... he's not just a defense specialist after all... imagine having Royce handling the ball ,running the pick and roll, breaking down defense against a very good playoff team in Indiana... we might be looking at DM's long term backcourt partner folks

More like 9m, but when the organization is sweating amounts in the 100ks, everything should get some scrutiny.

The other part is if the Jazz just had Royce and his meager cap hold heading into the offseason, signing Shaq to a multi-year would've been a lot easier (given that they were always going to overpay Favors and Clarkson). If things go very well here, then the Jazz probably just auditioned him for his longterm home elsewhere.

I also hope and think this makes Royce better, and I think prioritizing giving Shaq minutes is looked at in the light of making Royce better, because Royce is given the toughest assignment every single night. And there isn't a single other person tasked with any kind of expectation on the perimeter, and the results I believe have become underwhelming because he's asked to do this more than he should (like Rudy). So if Shaq can take some of that pressure off, it will have a synergistic effect.
They are different types of defenders but this will help.

I think this pushes all the guys ahead of him on the depth chart. If they aren’t defending they can grab some bench cuz Shaq will. Joe, Royce, Niang, Mike JC... defend or sit. Part of the reason I wanted him is there are a number of ways he can find himself on the court... got great positional versatility.

Before this signing there was a chance they could duck the tax if Doke didn't sign for 120%. That's out the window now, so I don't know why they would spend a second to get rid of Tucker's small tax hit. It would be significant if that small amount of space saved them from the tax, but this really just saved them a tiny amount. Especially when you consider that they paid >$3M for Hughes. Strange...whatever, they landed the correct target. Hope Shaq is healthy soon.
