That's why you don't evaluate guys based on what they can do against terrible NCAA defenses.Driving to the rim on straight line drives was supposed to be his strength
Let's be honest: I do not remember any other first-round pick for the Jazz who looked so bad and unprepared in his first games as Cody. Not since 2000. Am I missing anyone worse than Cody?
I bet some of the Jazz player personnel folks are popping Maalox at the moment though. As bad, probably not. He's been uniquely awful looking. Hendricks was very bad looking just last year. Hayward was really bad for most of his rookie season.
I'm not 100% sure how the degrees of badness matter though. We have had plenty of really bad looking rookies who ended up fine. More importantly in the history of basketball there have been thousands of players who weren't ready to play NBA basketball at 19, but ended up just fine.
Well, it was a long time ago and my memory is a bit hazy but IIRC Hayward showed some clear potential and production quite early. In his first three games he averaged 6 PPG and 4 RPG in only 20 minutes. He was often confused and hesitant but he did produced when he had an opening. It simply that afterwards the Jazz went on the insanely hot streak (16-3) and he was pushed to the garbage 2-4 minutes per game in favor of the vets.As bad, probably not.
