Should Donovan be the starting point guard next season?

Having three wings around Donovan and Rudy was always the best formula to use IF one of the wings can also create a bit. That might be the hardest thing in the league to find... so good luck.

Tony's suggestion that you go Donovan and then mix in JC with a bunch of wings who really can't create is no bueno. Ideally you need like a Paul George at SF to make it work at the highest levels... Halliburton is another guy that would be a perfect mix on offense. Conley's playmaking and ability to just run an offense would need to be replaced. Its probably a little late to make this pivot.
 
Since early on I thought it would be good to transition him to PG, partly because (his rookie year?) he had a really high FG% on passes thrown and seemed to make good reads, then partly because of the size issue. But that feeling soured quite a bit the past few years as he really needs another ball handler next to him to take some of the pressure off (which doesn’t have to be a PG but typically is). My fear about it is that he seems to get a bit of Marty McFly syndrome. He can’t stand down to someone calling him chicken. When other teams apply the pressure with him as the only ball handler, he seems to view that as a challenge and stops thinking rationally and feels he’s got something to prove. I blame this same reason for his really poor clutch numbers. I’m not enthused to completely commit to that. If he can show that he can throw it in reverse rather that crashing into a Rolls Royce (not Royce), then we may really be on to something.

I think you're right. If we hadn't put all that money and player assets into Conley and moved DM, who's small into the position best suited for small players, instead of doubling down on a small starting backcourt we probably could have bigger defensive wings to put next to him.

Not to go there because that's so far gone at this point, but if stupid *** Hayward had just stuck around I think this team with a Gobert/Hayward/Donovan core could have already won a damn championship.

I agree if they can find a taker but that may not be very easy.
 
And I will say this about Dononvan, in a scenario where he could get a layup or get another player a layup, he always takes the layup. His mentality is overwhelmingly score first.
 
Doesn’t matter if he’s PG or SG…but it also doesn’t make sense to have two 6’1 guys who can’t defend and 1.5 wings who also can’t defend. The whole idea that he absolutely had to have a “PG” next to him was dumb. Mike Conley works because Mike Conley is good at basketball and it’s good to have more than one guy who can create offense, but the FO never should have treated it like a requirement.

However things go, Conley and/or Bogey should be put on the trade market. Hopefully Thibs still has a job and wants to make a trade. I’d be open to something like Conley for Fournier+Reddish.
 
I like Mitchell more as a SG, but two 6’1 guards doesn’t work. Either get a tall PG or move Donovan there. If they go Donovan as PG they definitely should invest in a veteran PG to come of the bench.

Why? I bet Conley would have a pretty large market actually. He is a great teammate, veteran, elite shooter, and plays well on both sides of the floor. Only issue for the Jazz is his size. Plus, the last year of his contract is only partially guaranteed.

Off the top of my head I could see: Chicago, Washington, both LA teams, Boston, Toronto, and New York all potentially have interest.
 
Conley is one of my favorite players on the team, but at his age, I think it would be wise to move him while he still has value. I also agree with others that our backcourt is just too small.
 
Do we really have any other option at this point? Conley is barely an average starting PG at this point of his career. I mean just look at the starting PGs in this league.

Steph Curry, Lillard, Harden, CP3, Irving, Trae Young, Luka, Morant, Jrue Holiday, LaMelo Ball, Vanvleet, Garland, Jamal Murray, Dejounte Murray, DeAngelo Russell, SGA, Lowry, Haliburton, DeAaron Fox, Lonzo Ball, Malcolm Brogdon, Ben Simmons.

Does Conley hold clear advantage over any of them? Where would you rank Conley? If he's not better than 15 of those guys, he's a BELOW AVERAGE starter and will need to be upgraded/replaced for any team that wants to compete for a championship.

Fans will remember Conley the same way they remembered Jeff Teague and Bledsoe. But when it's time to go it's time to go
 
he should be but we are not going to do it if Mike is still here. we are running a my turn your turn system right now and if it doesn't work, we run the same system of my turn your turn until it works.
 
Unfortunately, I think the guy that will suffer the most from moving Conley and making Donovan the point guard is Rudy. His touches have already been on the decline since we lost Joe and now if we take Mike away too, I'm afraid he'll really struggle to get shots.
