Should the Congressman Resign Over Weinergate?

He didn't do anything illegal, so I don't really care. He is usually pretty entertaining, and actually has some (metaphorical) balls so I kind of like him. If we're focusing on a lowlife I vote we pick on John Edwards or Newt. The reason Repubs usually resign when they have a scandal is they run on the family values/religious platform, I think this will be a non-issue to most, and will likely be talked about most by those who already wouldn't vote for him anyway.

He seems like a bad lier, which is surprising for a congressman, so he actually gets bonus points from me over this. His cover-up was short lived and he gave a pretty honest press conference to come clean and didn't make any excuses. I'd just about vote for the guy and I'm sure we don't agree on too much.

I could see you giving him bonus points for not trying to cover it up to begin with, but he only came forward with the truth after several women claimed he also sent pics to them.
 
I'm not sure if any of you might remember a series of articles called "I am Joe's [bodypart]" that appeared in Time Magazine or Reader's Digest or something years ago, but all I could think about when this story came out was someone is probably going to write the article "I am Weiner's wiener"

and anyone remember a few years back when the Oscar Mayer company was auditioning folks to spend a year traveling around the country in their Wienermobile? I think this guy really missed his calling.

NPR did some street interviews with his constituents who aren't too happy about his lie...they said there is trust issues now. Also the Dem party doesn't want sex scandal fodder for Republicans to capitalize on.

I suspect Dems coming out and beating pulpits don't actually want him to resign; they are just trying to have some nice video in reserve so whoever runs against them can't try to play the values card and associate Wiener with them.
 
His last name is about as "unfortunate" as it gets here. I really wonder how many people would care if his name was Anthony Smith.

I think Anthony Smith might be in a worse situation - I think this guy's name turns it into more of a laughing matter than it otherwise might be.

Plus he might get a little bit of sympathy for being stuck with that name, who knows?

It does have the "Joseph Scalia" sorta ring to it. Nobody would vote for a guy with either name in the first place. We like to know what people are, children of parents who try that hard to cross over into another group, and who want to go into politics, are gonna just be too hard to understand. . . . . In politics you get two seconds to "fit in" to the voters' minds or there's just no place for you. . . . .

Word on the street is some dems really do want him to resign. Here's how to read the tea leaves on this one: If the press runs with this issue, it's because somehow he offended the top dems, maybe didn't "vote right" on something, or maybe getting in somebody's way, stepping on the wrong toes. If that's the case, I'd vote for him. Money can't buy a politician who is unsuccessfully "outed" in this manner. If Candrew's observation is correct, and his local support is unflappable, strong enough to buck even his own party turning on him, or even just a few big-pants blowhards in high places, it would be a case of democracy actually winning.

I think conservatives would just be stupid to spend two seconds on this gaffe. There's got to be some real issues to talk about.
