SL Trib: DL hints at #bakethat*************cake

The NBA’s free agency period begins this week, and the Utah Jazz front office will hit the phones hard as soon as it begins Tuesday night at 10:01 p.m. (July 1 back East). “I don’t want to build up expectations and under-deliver, but we’ll have those conversations very aggressively,” Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey said. “We feel like we have a unique city and organization to sell with some really good players.”

DL ready to pull that cake out.

The good news is that Dallas may potentially take a step back if they lose Ellis and don't add a capable PG in FA. Even if they get DeAndre Jordan, I could see them regressing without an upper tier playmaker.

Portland could take a SIGNIFICANT step back if they lose Aldridge, especially considering they traded Batum and will not have Matthews for a significant amount of time (if they re-sign). Who knows who they get in FA though. You would think they would be able to add someone of note if they do lose LA since they will have a lot of money to spend.

Those are the only two teams I see falling out though, unless another team sustains a significant injury to a star player. A case could be made for New Orleans with the fragility for a number of their key players too.

OKC will be getting back into the playoffs, so that only leaves 1 possible spot for Utah to sneak in.

We are going to have to have an excellent start to the year. We really can't afford to fall to the back of the race early.

Robin Lopez was a big part of their defense. He's a free agent too.

I know Booker has a great tradeable contract, but I really hope unless they get a borderline all star they don't get rid of him. I really believe his locker room impact on this team is massive, and that on this team more than most NBA teams locker room chemistry is at a premium.

They have massive amounts of money to spend then.

They traded for Plumlee, Vonleh, and Henderson so they will have greatly improved depth if they can bring back Lopez and sign a starting PF and SF.

You are aware that there is this team called OKC that will have a healthy Westbrook and Durant to start the year this time?

That's one of eight, and nobody would have expected them to miss the playoffs last year. Anything can happen injury wise. Utah is on the verge of overtaking teams like Dallas and Portland, and even a team like the spurs could be living on borrowed time with older players that are bound to lose a step sooner than later. I'll stand by my prediction that Utah is going to surprise people next year.

I am glad DL is being patient. The cake isn't completely baked yet and you don't want to take it out before it is done. People forget that this team didn't have Burks last year and that this was Quinn's first year installing his system. Hood, and Exum were rookies and Rudy was in his first year starting. Start trading off guys before they've had a chance to improve and the Jazz could regret it.

THe only guy I would trade at this point is BUrke, I think he is easily replaceable but I still want to see if he has proven his shot. The third year you can get a better reading on a player.

How good are the Clippers if they lose DAJ? They sure ended the year on a sour note. I'm also not 100% convinced Lance Stephenson really helps them.

Well if they lose DJ they can add someone else. I think an argument could be made that Jordan is an overrated defender and his FT woes greatly hurt the team.

You don't want to over bake the cake and make it dry. Ewww.

We don't pull it out now, and next year everyone has cap space and we aren't able to add any icing to the cake so we are stuck with a dry cake without any icing. Gross.

Pull that cake out while it's still moist and put some damn icing on it.
Fair enough.

I would love the jazz to get an all star type point guard.

Cy, are there any out there that are free agents?

I really wish some of the Western Conference stars would just go East.

If Marc Gasol, Aldridge, and Jordan all went to the East it would make **** way easier for Utah.

Gasol - Grizzlies
Jordan - Mavs
Aldridge - Raptors

Alec can be one of the most fun players to watch when healthy:

But also somewhat frustrating when he takes one dribble pull up jumpshot from 2 when completely open from 3.
