What's new

Speaking of IQ.

You said '... used decimals and fractions.'

(Never mentioned multiplying fractions without use of a calculator.)

I dare guess you use decimals and fractions everyday, multiple times.

My bad.

I still hate math.

You should take some chemistry classes. I watched this show that leads me to believe that being a meth cook could lead to interesting and exciting times. Just the ticket for someone who lacks pizazz in their life.

I couldn't read the whole thread(will try later) but E.J., are you sure you are healthy overall? There may be some physical causes to your memory or apperception problems and learning difficulties. I'm no expert but even your diet might have a role in this kind of things.

Fun bump.

To answer your question, I'm healthier now than I have ever been. That isn't saying much, considering I'm a fat lazy slob compared to actual healthy people, but I don't think my diet/physical health has anything to do with with my failing memory or desire to step up my intellectual game (so to speak).

I had a good chat with Colt.45 via PM's and he gave me some great advice. I'm currently plowing through math courses at Khan, and even looked at getting into the university down here. If I go that route, I'll have to wait until next semester because I missed the deadline. We'll see what happens going forward, but either way, it has been fun trying to get back into this crap after 15 years away.

Trout, take this for what it's worth - your limited IQ is infinite.
Don't let it squander itself.

:-)

That's great news. Colt.45 is a great dude and I'm sure he helped you as best he could as he did help me on another subject.

You can be hundred percent sure that math is the ultimate thing to rouse the brain and mind. And it's in fact very enjoyable and lovable when you can understand it. I hope you go as far as you can go at it. I also wish the best decision for you about your university plans.

But besides math, there are also very good websites on the internet focusing on brain/mind training with little game like exercises. You can google them if you want, some of them might sound as false advertising but there are good ones too, as well as some free ones. I can suggest Lumosity.com the most, but I realized that it became a paid service now. Still it's affordable if you'd like to consider($3-$4 a month), I liked it a lot when it was free, it could be better now.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you're doing something about it. Just don't forget that it's almost impossible to regress for your brain as long as you use it and keep it sharp, not until your 70ies anyway. Ahh, before I forget, one of the most effective things which will keep your mind sharp is obviously reading. If I remember correctly from the book threads, you already read some but increasing your daily reading could help you greatly. But just try not to read in a narrow field only, ie, if you read mostly novels and S/F for instance, you could try historical books or biographies etc. I could suggest reading popular science books as well. In fact they could benefit you the most since they might provoke you to learn and think more about many scientific topics. There are many great popular science books I could suggest here later if you are interested.

I was being fatuous, but yes, I agree. If there is a God, and He created the Universe (or multiverse, as it may be), then yes, I think math could be considered His "language".

I still hate it.

You are gonna love it if you can hold on to it. Trust me.

BTW Trout, just because I tried to give a few ideas, don't think that I see myself as a smart person or I think I am a high IQ guy with a super brain or something. If anything, I find myself pretty average, especially next to my bro who is probably a semi-genius anyway. And I also have similar complains of yours sometimes. But I'm just one of those not so bright but hard working guys who has to get around problems with working harder than most. So, I just tried to write a few things that work for me. Math+Chess+popular science+puzzles+lots of reading etc are the things that help me the most. Likewise, the last two years or so, I found that regular exercising is also very helpful to make me feel better about my cognitive skills. Maybe trying to learn a new language could also be very beneficial for you but I find it particularly hard(almost ten years of English and I'm still so insufficient) so I think I gave up on that matter.

Anyway just wanted to make sure, because I really wouldn't like to sound like a smart-***, arrogant, cocky person or something.
