I got lucky with my genetics. No addiction problems whatsoever for me despite so many opportunities to become an addict.

Prone being the key word. I believe anyone can control themselves if they want to. Some people are more likely to struggle with addictions but I dont believe anyone isnt capable of overcoming it. I think anyone who really wants to can have a drink or 2 and be fine and control themselves can.

On a side note and only slightly related. AA has been a plague on society preaching that we cant control ourselves and its all or nothing. Besides there are pills that have been fairly effecting in curing "alcoholism." Not that I think that is the best solution but its much better than AA.

That sounds nice, and while I agree in principle, this sounds like it is coming from someone who never truly had to deal with the subject at hand, or any related subject. In short, over-simplified. Way over-simplified.

I've dealt with addictions on many levels and yet to meet anyone who couldn't overcome it.

Ok. We can agree to disagree. I have attended funerals of people, good friends, people I loved, who lost that fight. But your experience is obviously different and that is cool. I am glad you never had to deal with that aspect of this topic.

I have lost plenty of people around me who have been dealing with alcohol problems and some with other addiction problems. There were much bigger issues at play that lead to the addiction problems. Couldnt and didnt are different words.

Also I was discussing alcohol issues, other issues such as pain meds can be a different issue although often relates.

Agreed. No doubt other issues are involved, whether preceding or as a result of the substance abuse. The fallacy is that these things happen in a bubble. There are always extenuating circumstances. If it were simply the cravings alone that a person had to overcome, or the urge to partake in the first place, with no other exacerbating issues then yes, everyone who wants to can overcome. But it is rarely that simple.

People often don't understand depression until they have it.
People often don't understand addictive personality traits until they have one.
People often don't understand race relation issues (from all sides) until they live them.

There are plenty of examples that will not relate when you explain them.

I get what you are saying, but consider that some can get addicted after a single drink. Genetics has an influence here that most can't understand.

Continue staying lucky. You can open up these genes over time and people eventually close them over time without use. It's how our bodies work. Opening them up is where the hereditary problems start.

I agree that AA is basically horrible. It was a good attempt at helping people at a time when addiction was hardly understood. The fact that is has become the standard in addiction treatment and can be court ordered is bad.

My mother struggled with alcohol addiction for most of my life. She was "recovering" much more than she was "practicing" but I don't think the all or nothing, you have zero control approach helped her much at all. When she'd fall of the wagon it was a ****ing free-for-all. I think AA encouraged her to just go from 0 to 100 the second she had a drink during recovery. I mean, she was helpless, right? No control, no ability to limit herself, completely powerless to her addiction.

The last few years of her life she started drinking again, but not in excess. It seemed, contrary to what AA had tried to beat into her head, that she could have just a few drinks and stop. I mean she had changed in many different ways, but low and behold, controlling her drinking was possible.

I disagree with that statement. I dont think Alcohol has the ability to physically make anyone addicted after one drink. You may be in a mental state that you want to abuse something for various reasons that cause you to suffer an addiction but that is something that requires therapy and help from.

You've never heard of a teenager becoming an addict overnight? This doesn't happen to normal people. It happens to those with addictive tendencies, and yes, it does happen. That doesn't take away from anything you're saying about the inner strength to fight for control.
