The Church of Dante Exum

Do you believe, now?

Too early to tell, but yes I believe.

Although games against the junior varsity team (Suns) don't add much to my evaluation of Dante. Have him play against a team with better length, speed and a rim protector, let's pressure test the young man.

And realistically he has a long way to go offensively. Shot lacks confidence and is slow, high number of poor decisions. But all this is expected given his experience, so as long as he continues to learn and improve, I'm not worried.

Believing in something that isn't true, doesn't make it true though. Therefore, even for believers it's a waste of time and/or money.

Doesn't make it true, but a lot of people need something to believe in man. It helps them live better lives. Makes me think of the Counting Crows lyrics,

"Believe in me
Help me believe in anything
Cause I want to be someone who believes."

I think deep down, most people, whether consciously or subconsciously, are looking for something to believe in. Quite a few people find it via religion. Others find it via love and their belief in another person. Countless things. I don't believe it's a waste of time if it's real to them.

I would venture to say belief is often times a product of inspiration, a zest for living. Whereas not believing in anything, people like that I've known are generally jaded and disillusioned.

We all do need to believe in something. The thing you didn't mention though among the other external things, is to believe in yourself. Not in an arrogant, unhealthy way but in a way that says that you believe in and care about the health and well being of yourself and of others. That's all anyone needs to believe in to help them live better lives. Morals come from within because people are good and can learn from the mistakes of the past. Morals do not come from a place of worship which tells us that we are bad to the bone, and they have the road map of salvation from that dilemma. That is why I agree that church is a waste of time and money.

Churches are waste of money and time.

You mean the ones that developed modern hospital system an provide more care than any other institution, developed orphanages an began assisting adoption, an created hundreds of higher educational institutions, an provide tons of welfare an bring people together for community projects? Yeah dude churches are a huge waste of time and money

Religion has always been an institution that promotes inclusion. "If you're not with us, you're against us". Religions are not accepting of others who have different beliefs. It's us vs the pagans and infidels. Religions have dominated cultures throughout history because of it. There is simply no telling where our culture and our mentality to care for others would be today without religion. You can't assume though that the caring for others wouldn't exist or even excel compared to today's standards in a secular, global society.

I like how he uses both hands with his back to the basket at the top of the arc.

Meh, the whole back to the basket from the 3pt line is just a crutch because he doesn't trust his handle. I don't know that it's an actual weapon.

Reality is what you believe it is. I'm not a church guy, but I have 100% respect for true believers (especially the ones who are not all about being sanctimonious and trying to convert everyone else).

Okay so you want to kill the golden goose? Religion created secular society.

Sure I cannot say what society would be like but I can look up statistics that religious people give more to charity than not religious. You can not tell me secular society is more giving then religious founded.

Reality is what you believe it is.

Another terrible reduction from Joe Bag. There isn't a one-to-one conformance between the Real and belief. This completely erases the existence of the unconscious.

Ignoring the obviously problematic idea of a "true believer" + the problem with respect being meted out on those terms, this statement makes a mockery out of what I'll call "information." Basically this position says, if you believe in something powerfully enough, that matters more than if what you believe is true. At bottom, that's a credulous/disrespectful stance on information.

Reading takes like this makes me hella glad that I don't live in your reality.

That post wasn't for you, actually. It was for other people who may read your boring repackaging of the worst aspects of common sense. I can't tell you're probably lost forever, dude. I'm not worried about you.
