The Climate Change Thread

When I was in my teens and saw Michael Jackson's Earth Song, I was like sure this gotta change us, I was so pumped. I was just a stupid kid though. Now I know nothing is going to change quickly enough. It's a downfall from here on and now the only goal is to slow the downfall and try to find ways on how to live here, on our growingly more hostile planet on us. We made it! We are a natural force, yay humans! I'm 40 and I'm smoking cigarettes so I'll be ok, just sad for the kids... When they're middle aged, the world will be insufferably full of magards (=idiots) and natural catastrophies.

A common sense evaluation of the situation and solution for that situation.

It is important to understand that there is no DEI policy that suggests unqualified people should be hired. Most of the time it means to at least consider the entire field of qualified candidates and don't just hire the dude who you spent half the interview talking about golf and sports with and that you don't just want to have as an employee but a new hang-out buddy because you have so much in common.

Most of the time when the less qualified person gets hired it is because they are white and the interviewer is white.

I think you'll find that's what makes a happy workplace, most people can be taught the appropriate skills to function in the workplace, what they can't be taught is how to fit in. At my old workplace we had a fairly diverse and representative group of guys, the key term here being guys, we were the only department (Security) that was entirely male. (Well us and the actual working engineers, engineering employed women in admin and non front line roles) After an internal review that found that despite high performance and wide levels of regard across the organisation for professionalism and performance, the organisation was failing the cohort in regards to welfare, that the working group was burnt out and unsupported by the organisation.

A new management team was installed and we were reorganised within the organisational reporting chain, this was the first of a number of important mistakes, the department was re-organised under People and Culture (HR) a non operational department. From this point a series of decisions were made with no regard to operation requirements, almost all of them bad, most importantly as a policy we had to hire women. Fast forward 4 and a half years, 7 of the original cohort of 32 remain, hundreds of years of experience walked out the door. In that time over 20 women have been hired, most leave as soon as they see what they sign on for, a couple hang around and for the most part cause more problems than they resolve, in that time two have worked out and are able to hold their own, that's a spectacular failure rate.

Now why are the experienced staff leaving? Are they leaving because they are hiring women? I don't think so, they're leaving because they are not being supported, they are leaving because management is not hiring the best person to work next to them and watch their back. For every unqualified person they put on the floor the risk and workload for them increases. In short their hiring policies have been a disaster both male and female and for a lot of reasons, mostly because operational requirements and standards were no longer the focus, in fact they were an inconvenience and from this point, the whole place fell apart.
 
Amazing is the degree to which Trump and MAGA are divorced from the real world. This decision here is axiomatic, we all know Trump finds climate change a “hoax”. Still, the degree to which MAGA has been built on a foundation of disinformation and lies is really astonishing!

It might end up being one of the greatest such examples of a social, cultural, and political movement, born of society-wide distrust of all sources of authority, with Trump’s collection of lies the foundation upon which the anger and distrust can be laid, that our world has ever seen..

The result is an administration ensconced in lies and disinformation. What is remarkable is that one can truly say, I believe, that this movement, based as it is on lies about medicine, lies about science, lies about election results, lies about and identification of “the enemy within”, lies about Russia, is really all in service to the creation of a true Idiotocracy.

Trump and MAGA is installing stupidity as the foundation of policy. Not to mention eliminating any freedom of speech that they don’t like.

It is a good thing that disinformation is born of convenience with these folks. If they were actually ideological they would have deeply held ideological disagreements with one another. We can infer from the lack of ideological struggles that this is all transactional with them.
 
In so many ways, on so many fronts, Donald Trump and Project 2025 are intent on destroying our nation. Trashing the ideals at our foundation, which were after all, ideals that took generations to adhere to, but nonetheless there to a degree at the foundation. Still, those ideals were what led Americans to believe they were special. Even to the extent of the well known observation, by the overweening pride of Americans that “it can’t happen here”. One must wonder how we could fall for the belief that we are somehow so special that we cannot possibly make the same tragic mistakes other people’s, other nations, have made before us.

Here, in one of the more stunning misdirections of the modern era, one important area, where, Trump insists that we must be stupid, we must not just trash climate science, we must eliminate it entirely. Just as no public figure, no journalistic agency must utter “the Gulf of Mexico”, so too no government agency, including the EPA, must mention “climate change”.

We must destroy climate science, we must trash climate scientists as agents of disinformation and lies. As with other areas of modern science, we must reject rational arguments, we must elevate stupidity over educated expertise.

Just one more area, an important one for sure, where Trump is weakening our nation more than any president in our history. To date.
Abandon our allies. Embrace the world view of Vladimir Putin. Be more like Putin’s Russia. Putin cracks down on free speech. Heck, he kills people for speaking up. Wherever they live on Earth. Kill free speech, if Trump doesn’t like what he hears you saying. Destroy science. Destroy medical research. Destroy cancer research. Initiate graduate schools to reject new scientific training for the next generation of American scientists! That is now happening at our leading research post grad institutions. Destroy human knowledge. Destroy learning. Starve children world wide. Folks, this is a great Evil we see emerging in our country.

But one such area in the elevation of human ignorance over knowledge. This is the America of MAGA and Trump apologists:

Purging the government of scientists, experts, and career civil servants and slashing fundamental programs will cost lives.”

“The fact of the matter is that the private sector, as it presently exists, simply cannot quickly spin up to fill any void left by substantial dismantling of NOAA and/or the NWS,” Daniel Swain, a UCLA climate scientist said in a statement he posted on social media. “The now-confirmed and rumored additional cuts to come at NOAA/NWS are spectacularly short-sighted, and ultimately will deal a major self-inflected wound to the public safety of Americans and the resiliency of the American economy to weather and climate-related disasters.”

It’s unclear the exact nature of the NOAA firings, but they are likely to be subject to a legal review. A federal judge just on Thursday blocked several mass firings of probationary employees at different federal agencies because they were likely carried out illegally.

But the mass exodus of NOAA employees shocked environmental advocates and scientists across the globe, particularly those focused on the climate, environment and meteorology.

“Gutting NOAA will hamstring essential lifesaving programs that forecast storms, ensure ocean safety, and prevent the extinction of whales and sea otters,” said Miyoko Sakashita, the oceans program director for the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental nonprofit that works to protect wildlife. “I think most Americans want these kinds of vital government services protected, and we’ll do everything we can to defend them.”
