The Inevitable Favs Reunion

Nah, he certainly wouldn’t be my first choice. But, looking at the artificial constrains the FO places on themselves, parlaying a Gasol signing into a Conley move to the bench may be the ceiling of potential offseason moves that don’t include Conley defaulting to the starting lineup next year.

And I agree he’s probably washed. But washed Gasol > TB. And he can shoot the three and spread the floor. Plus him and Conley off the bench isn’t bad as a tandem.
I’d be fine with it... although... mikes buddies are 0/2 so far.

We have enough offense that we should be bringing Udoh back on a minimum.
No we shouldnt.

Udoh mostly sucked. Yes he was good on D, but that was 2 years ago. He's awful on offense. There is a reason Utah didnt bring him back. They can do better.

Probably anyone
I honestly feel like this is picking a name out of a hat. A guy whose name we may recognize, but are not at all impressed by, but we'll do some kind of "deep dive" and maybe find 1-2 things that are interesting, and we'll laude it as a great signing, then it will result in being very "meh" as our initial impression. Signings like Francisco Elson come to mind. As I glance over the free agent list, here are those kind of guys that I see:

Ante Zizic
Anthony Tolliver (yes, we'll try to pretend he's a center [because he's slow and old])
Kyle O'Quinn
Chris Boucher
Ian Mahinmi

I mean, a couple of those guys wouldn't necessarily be bad signings, but when that's who you're comparing Udoh against, I'd rather take the known guy who can allow us defensive continuity when we've got some offensive surplus.

Add John Henson to that list. He's the most intriguing to me of the super duper "meh" guys.

Those guys might be a hair better than Bradley, possibly worse. If you're going to spend some money on the PF/center position it has to be a clear upgrade. Otherwise you run into an Ed Davis or Jeff Green situation where they aren't even playable and its a complete loss.

And that’s where I’m at with this. I’d rate Udoh as being an upgrade for us over Bradley. Cy says we can get someone better. What I’m saying is that those guys “better” than Udoh are those caliber, whose improvement over Bradley is arguable.

So we can pay a lot for Favors, or we can pay a little for Udoh, or we can pay slightly more for some “meh,” or we can roll with TB.

The more I’ve thought about backup center the more I’m thinking we should change the way we play when Rudy is out of the game. There aren’t a lot of minimum guys you can funnel to that will protect the rim and handle that defensive pressure. It’s also helpful if we have a system that requires more from our perimeter guys when teams pull Rudy away from the basket.

Udoh is about as good as you can ask for on defense at the price we should pay. The offense will be rough but maybe it doesn’t bother JC as much as other guys. I also don’t know if it’d take more than the minimum to get Ekpe... I think he gets 3-4M in China.

if they can move off of TB and Ed’s money I’d pretty much guarantee we get Favs back. DL would love the certainty and the story of reuniting Utah with Favs. If the market is too stingy on those guys then I think we grab something from the meh pile. Gasol would be great too depending on the years on the deal. I don’t think the wing market will yield something great in the MLE range and would rather take a flier on Shaq, Dotson, etc. or our pick could be used on a wing.

@Wes Mantooth had already said this, but even if we did nothing but grab Shaq and Udoh, I think that's a pretty solid off-season because it's actually an organized direction and addresses our needs. It would need to be coupled with moving off guys we'd be tempted to play like TB.

(“Too many question marks”) But we might already have that guy in Morgan. He’s mobile enough and has excellent hands... He could definitely play up on the PnR and space the floor on offense.

I know I’m preaching to the choir here.....

And he could play alongside Rudy, too—either as the “5” who needs to play up on the PnR because of the matchup (while Rudy is playing the rover), or as the “4” over on the weak side corner who’s ready to help at the rim.

I ****ing wish we knew more about Morgan.

This is the spirit of what I am trying to say. If Morgan can do some Favors-y things at a bargain cost then you can do other stuff with our exceptions... but we don't really know.

Yes we do. He can't do Favors things.
I wouldn’t want him to try (and I don’t think that is precisely what HH is suggesting either). On defense, I’d want him up on the PnR or switching. On offense, I’d want him spacing, pick n popping, etc. I want his skills to be leveraged into a different defensive scheme. With Favors, we’d be running the same **** all game, for the most part.

I think he can provide some rim protection, though, too.

All of this. I kinda wanna see what we got if we can't make a no-brainer signing.
