What's new

The Jazz finished the preseason leading the NBA in 3PT shooting percentage (42.9%)

It looks like KOC has addressed our glaring weakness of last year - bringing in guys who can hit the three (Marvin, Mo, Foye, Murphy).

Sure - it's preseason, but it's a good sign; plus the bigs will benefit from a stretched floor!

I read this earlier too, its very good sign. No doubt with our bigs that the wings are going to get wide open looks.

Also of note:

The jazz had a top 10 offense [101.4 (6th in the league)] AND defense [93.5 (7th)]

That is definitely a recipe for success if it can be achieved in games that matter

Funny that you mention marvin, mo, foye, and murphy but not burks.

Burks is the biggest reason that we were #1.... didn't he shoot around 70% from 3?

Yep. Burks was 7-11, Mo 7-12, Hayward 4-10, and Marvin 11-19. The only other guy who attempted 10 or more 3's was Foye, who shot 8-27.

I wish I could take heart, but preseason just doesn't matter. The first 6 games are a good test. We'll see then what the uptempo, 3 pt shooting Jazz will be.

And from those first 6 games we will speculate and project the rest of the season with pinpoint accuracy. :)

7/11 = 64% but one of these was a half-courter, so he was really 7/10 = 70%. Burks shot 50% on spot up threes last year; this is not a fluke. I also saw Burks square up very nicely on one of these. His feet adjusted and he had great balance. He's obviously not going to shoot that the rest of the year, but if he takes spot up threes mainly, he'll be very good from 3 this year (40+%). Burks kills me when he dribbles three feet off of the three point line and launches a long fast jump shot. He needs to improve his BBIQ.

Basically that second unit should be Kanter and Favors on the left and right block respectively with Foye, Burks, and Marvin. I don't think Carroll should be in the rotation. Then they should just feed off of Kanter and Favors, launching open threes all game long or have Burks develop the ability to run P&R with Favors.

I seriously can't fathom watching a Jazz squad that uses the 3 point shot as a weapon.

Mountain America Credit Union better be paying up this year. It was always a small conspiracy theory of mine they chose to give money to the one thing the Jazz never did well.,

I don't think I saw a single play run with the desired result of a 3pt shot.

It'll be more of a weapon, but, not something that we use as a first option. Well, not unless we're down 3 with less than 24 seconds to go, then maybe, sometimes.

I was a bit surprised at a couple pull up 3s on the break, that's teh biggest change in strategy I saw. Other than that we really just saw some unsustainable % shooting from 3 from some of our guys. Just got hot in other words.

I expect we'll be closer to league average on 3s attempted and made, but, nothing beyond that.

This. If we tighten up the rotation and remove Carroll from it (and cut back on Foye unless he is playing back up PG) the Jazz will become an even better team than what we saw in preseason.

I'm also on the "I like Foye at back up PG more than Tinsley" club.

Better shooting, better defense .. hard not to agree.

Who's starting at the 2/3? Hayward and...?

Man, such a big agree with JJAS re: PnR with Burks and Favors. If I were on the coaching staff I'd bring in Stockton and Malone for a week of two-on-two and have them drill the **** out of that play.

I'd still play Carroll 10 mpg, at least for the regular season. Guy brings good defense and looks like he improved his offensive game over the off-season.

Yep I like Carroll and am glad he is on the team but I was thinking use him a bit like Price was used (but a bit more since there is no superstar in front of Carroll) when the team needs energy/spark or if Burks, Hayward or Williams aren't getting it done for whatever reason on any given night then get a little extra time (or foul trouble or injury).

Basically in my head I'm imagining Hayward, Williams and Burks as the 3 man rotation for the SG/SF spot mixing in Foye and a sprinkle of Carroll.
