About the Wizards, what kind of package could they get for Beal? He's 29 and has 4 more years after this one, at $57M in 26/27. He's a good player, but I don't think he's worth that contract at all. Is he in the swap-for-Westbrook conversation?

I think Beal trade value has taken a slight hit this season, but he is probably the best player in the NBA that could be available... so competition should push it back up. Lakers were reportedly interested but the talk was they dont have the assets for him. Last summer Beal to Blazers was also something that was discussed, since Dame and Beal are apparently newfound buddies.

Beal fits both Dame and Lakers windows pretty well. So sort of makes sense those two would pursue him.

Edit: About the trade value question, I'm not really sure. Maybe 2 firsts and 2 somewhat promising rebuilding pieces + salary filler?

By the time he is getting paid that much it wont be as nearly as much as it seems now.

He's still really good. I doubt they would just swap him for Russ and two future picks. It would have to be closer to the package we got for Donovan.

I agree he's really good, and of course that contract at 33/34 isn't like some other stars who're paid until they're more like 36-37 (even Curry's contract can end up being horrible). I don't see which teams would give up a Donovan-like package, though.

Aside from whether Beal is worth this kind of money, it is absolutely insane to me that we have reached a point where discussing whether paying a single player $50+ million for a single season is "worth" it. How far are we from $20-40 mill being a journeyman salary in the NBA? Because 10 years ago who would have thought that paying a player like Conley $20 mill after a down contract and multiple injuries would be viewed as just fine or basically just the cost of doing business and not just flat out crazy? Unbelievable where this thing has gone.

I said closer to, not the Donovan package. We didn't really get that much for Donovan. If Lauri didn't make a huge leap it would have been a ****** trade for Utah.

Sure. Lauri is a good example. He's being paid $16.5 million this season, and that's seen around the league as a borderline pitiful salary for his production. Ten years ago that was legit (super)star money.

If Markkanen keeps this up and tests free agency, his next contract will easily be $30 million per year.

Lauri will get the max. Whatever the max is, he's getting that. Guessing it will be over 40 million by that time.

Here is the deal with Beal though... he has a no trade clause. He can force his way to the destination. So the Lakers picks may be it... given he said there were no big markets that chased him in FA I think he would work his way out.

For the Wiz at least you get a boost to the rebuild and didn't lose Beal for nothing... but his re-signing kinda feels like the PG one where both sides kinda had a wink and a nod where they agreed if it wasn't working and he wants out they will oblige. I think Beal and DeRozan were the guys the Lakers were waiting for tbh.

If Dono had a no trade clause and he said "NY or nothing bitch!" it would have been tough to get maximum value.
