But he doesn't hit rim and then picks up the ball again?

I think it has to be a legitimate shot but I think the rule differs across different levels of basketball. I think the rule has also changed. Used to catching your own airball was a travel but now in one of the levels it doesn't matter if it was a shot attempt. Either way its fun and just let it happen if its fun and unique.

Back in the days the ball had to hit rim in the NBA, but only had to be a legitimate shot attempt in FIBA, but that might have changed, of course. I don't really think this is a legit shot attempt, but I agree that it's fun and unique and don't really mind the non-call.
 
  1. A player may dribble a second time if he lost control of the ball because of:
    1. A field goal attempt at his basket, provided the ball touches the backboard or basket ring
    2. An opponent touching the ball
    3. A pass or fumble which touches his backboard, basket ring or is touched by another player.
      1. PENALTY: Loss of ball. Ball is awarded to the opposing team on the sideline nearest the spot of the violation but no nearer the baseline than the foul line extended.

Its legal even if it is a pass because it touched the backboard.


This rule has oscillated a little throughout the years. I think the college rule is slightly different.

Its one of those that is different in different levels and yes has changed here and there. It always comes up in pickup but usually on an airball. There is another one that comes up every now and again about going out of bounds and establishing yourself inbounds that differs.

I tried to find a definitive rule, and from what I can tell, you can do what Ball did legally if you jump to catch the ball in the air, not the ground (which he did).

Look above. If its a pass that hits the rim, backboard or another player he can grab it. He's good. It should be legal if it wasn't... again... fun.
 
Cavs offense is legitimately incredible. Garland has had a big bounce back year. Has a team they're shooting 41% from three on high volume :oops:
