I don't believe the so-called imperial presidency began with Trump, but he is in a class by himself at this point. Especially in his effort to deny Congress its constitutionally granted power of oversight over the Executive branch, he is, in effect, trying to be outside and above the law.

And he's an extreme case in many respects. The response he has generated within the electorate is not a case of people being unable to accept election results. Where there is smoke, there is fire, and the bottom line, for me, is that here is a man who generates support by appealing to anger and fear, and in some cases, racial animosity. He appeals to people's baser instincts.

Whether people put it in just those terms, I do believe recognizing he is doing that is at the root of the opposition to him. We have sunk to new lows when we elect a man who goes out of his way to be divisive, not unifying. The negative reaction to Trump is the least surprising result of his coming to power.

Bush Jr., Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al unleashed the Iraq War, which in turn unraveled the Middle East we see today. And still it plays out. And still we have not seen all the consequences that will trace themselves back to that decision on the part of the Bush administration. I have not forgotten that.

Don't take extreme reactions, and with a broad brush, apply them as something all Trump opponents subscribe to. The legitimate comparison of Trump to Hitler begins with the simple fact that both were demagogues. Demagogues recognize the fears, anxieties, and anger that exits in segments of the population, and then use scapegoats to provide a focus for that fear and anger.

It is precisely leaders like that, and such an approach by a leader represents the apex of cynicism, since it is using people's fears and anxieties to obtain and maintain power, that represent a danger to a democracy. Both these individuals appeal to the baser instincts in their followers. Leaders that rule through fear and appeal to baser instincts seldom do their respective societies much good. That is where one can make a good comparison, not by somehow saying the horrors of Nazi Germany will be repeated here.

The comparison is in the type of leadership, and the cynicism of the demagogue. If people overdraw the comparison, it is unfortunate, since it can lead to a complete misunderstanding of why and how such leaders can be legitimately compared.

Sorry man, there is absolutely no comparison. None. Zero,. Zilch. There is no broad brush here, it's meant to pin point and a cause fear. Statements like this are extremely dangerous. You are literally comparing Trump to a person responsible for killing 6+ million Jews. There's no comparison. This is nothing more than emotional overreach and fear mongering.

You're saying Trump is using fear and anxiety but it's you comparing Trump to Hitler. You may not realize it but by doing so, with no broad brush, you are also insinuating his followers are comparible to SS Nazis. Hell posters in this very thread called have me a Nazi, just to prove a point. Its uneducated, morally void, and downright lunacy.

Democrats every single day strike fear into it's constituents. From the day he put his name on the ballot box Democrats have a demographic that has screamed "RESIST", "NOT MY PRESIDENT", "IM MOVING TO CANADA" Every day I read people tweets from random source on how evil he is, then it's swept under the rug. Not all of it but a lot of it.

On the concept of fear, nothing is more scary than saying the world is going to end if we don't stop having babies. Now I'm no scientist and I can literally see the damage humans cause this Earth but we've been hearing this for almost a century. One day is the Ozone, the next it Global warming, in the 60's we were going to have ice, and now it's Climate change. I want to make it clear that I do believe humans are ruining this Earth but we've also been told the world is ending more than once. The Ozone layer scared the **** out of me when I would watch cartoons and be told were all going to burn.

I'm sorry "using people's fears and anxieties to obtain and maintain power". I live in Trump territory. These people are very good people. What are these people so afraid of? Wanting border protection? Wanting jobs? Wanting a strong economy? What these people are actually afraid of is a party that by it's own words will come to your door with police and take a constitutional right. A party that preaches socialism around every corner. Bernie for example called Warren a Capitalist like that's such a terrible thing(more fear mongering).

Hell, even Hillary has said that not excepting the results of an election are a threat to Democracy. Yet here we have people blaming Russia while also admitting they have no clue if it really effected the results. I quoted a poster yesterday who said this very thing. Now you have these same people screaming that Tulsi is an Russian agent.

Red, you're one of the more level headed posters here. I can admit sometimes I'm not. I respect you but I think you and your party need to take a long look in the mirror before calling anybody anything. Especially something as downright terrible as Hitler. Nobody is gassing, starving, torturing, and experimenting on anybody and in the near future will not. And I know that's not what you're saying, but that's is what Hitler did. He is one of the most evil people in the history of mankind. I'm sorry, there is no comparison.
