Honestly deserves it own thread, I was raised in the Catholic church but im an atheist , this is the only Pope I've ever respected as a moral leader.
I grew up in one of the poorest parts of Melbourne, we had Jesuit priests, I remember my grandmother feeding them when I was a kid. I also remember the same grandmother telling me to challenge everything they said. My Nonna was devout in her religion her grandson was angry in his. In the injustice of the church. John Paul II did nothing to help that.
The world has lost a giant today, a man of sacrifice and leadership, I will mourn Pope Francis. I hope we see his like again.

My sense of him is that Jorge Bergoglio was a good man. Unfortunately, he was too constrained by the politics of the institution to make the changes he saw were needed. And if I say much more, there'd be some fists flying.
The church could be the worlds first monolithic organisation, change is slow. In some ways his legacy will be seen in who proceeds him. JP II did his best to stack the church with conservative voices, Francis was in many way a repudiation of JP II's church. This Pope has appointed 109 Cardinals, lets see what happens.

I mean, when you said JP II did his best to stack the church with conservative voices. I thought JP II was fairly moderate - I mean, he was still Catholic, so...
JP II was very conservative, he was a significant ally of Ronald Reagan, for instance he denounced liberation theocracy and refused to denounce CIA sponsored death squads in Central America. In terms of the church he favoured a closed church, no women, no gays, no reform, he believed the churches would maintain its relevance by refusing to admit the world around it had changed. This is in stark contrast to Pope Francis's view of the church. In pushing this agenda, JP II would ignore tradition in terms of appointing cardinals, traditionally when a progressive cardinal died he would be replaced with a progressive cardinal, a conservative with a conservative and so on, the thinking behind this was that it would promote debate and discussion with the church. JP II massively favoured appointing conservatives, this is how you end up with Ratzinger, a cardinal from the most conservative wing of the church. How they went from Ratzinger to Francis in 8 years is still a mystery. (it is rumoured that Bergoglio did receive votes in 2005 having greatly impressed the conclave despite being a relative unknown)
