What's new

Third center

I love Cooley's personality off the floor and hustle on the floor but I don't think he's good enough at basketball all around to get be ahead of any of our other bigs. He's horrible finishing around the rim, horrible defender, he's undersized for a 5, not mobile enough for either the 4 or the 5. I guess he can rebound and is a big body down low, but I don't think that's enough. I'd take both Pleiss and Withey ahead of him.

How does that make any sense? None of those guys have PROVEN to be good backups, not one of them. So to say we have good depth when we don't have a starting caliber pg or a proven backup is ridiculous.
I think Burke and Cotton both showed they can be decent backups last season. Burke had disappointing %'s, but he compares favorably to most other backups. Cotton came in and ran the team very well. Neto is a bit of an unknown, but did a pretty decent job as a starter in Europe. I think that translates to AT LEAST a decent backup in the league.

I don't have faith in one of them right now being a decent starter. But I do think any of them would be fine playing 10-15 minutes behind a quality starter. So yes, we have 3 backups and no top-tier starter. Certainly better than when we had Watson and Tinsley as our backups.

Disasters to the depth chart, I think he means. Not financial disasters.

Yup. Considering this comment:

Lindsey on PGs: "But if we’re not getting the results we want, we have close to $7 million under the cap" to make a move.

I just can't take the list of PG's on the depth chart too seriously. I assume if it reaches a tipping point, it will damage controlled well before its a disaster.

Couple of players (I think Booker was one of them) talked about how sometimes it's just a matter of a player going to the right team and situation that separates that guy as a NBA player from another who doesn't get a chance in the league. I think Withey is in a PERFECT situation to excel. He can be Gobert-lite. Utah is one of the few teams bucking the trend of going small. And they're building their defense around a tall, shot-blocking center. Great opportunity for him to showcase his skills.

Burke, Neto and Cotton are good depth. All are (or should be, in Neto's case) very good backup PG's. So the depth is there, we just don't have that #1 guy.

I'm curious to what a good backup player is to you? I'm thinking a solid back up player to you is a guy on the team that shows up and puts a jersey on before the game. You say the Jazz have a good back up with depth even though we're rated to be 29th in the league for the 2nd year in a row. I think (and I think most fans can follow me) that a good back up player is one that contributes numbers similar to that of a player at the starting position or role above him. Even if it's for a short time period. Look at the Clippers for example. Pierce, J Smith, both great role players. Compare that or anything to two guys like Neto and Cotton, the jazz don't have good back up role players. I'm not being unfair with saying that, you just need to watch basketball outside of the Jazz.
