He was irrationally optimistic. That's ok. Just remember where "fan" is derived from (fanatical).

I do agree with bigmike that the Jazz underachieved. But I'm glad. Jazz could have won 30+ and ended up with McBuckets instead of Exum.

Looking at our roster - pending free agency - I don't see Utah making the playoffs in 14/15, either - even IF we retain Hayward. The WC is tough. Maybe Utah has a Phoenix-like season and falls just short. That's ok with me. To improve from 25 to 40 wins would be significant. Then we have a lottery pick and look for the 50-win mark the season after.

Everything still depends on Kanter/Favors. If they can each make a leap, we can make the playoffs.
 
The Jazz went 19-22 over a period of 41 games between November 25th and Feb 26th. That's exactly half a season, and on pace for 38 wins. If I had the ability to predict future and see Burke's injury, I'd certainly use it on something more useful than guessing basketball win totals.

Also, I thought the FO had more integrity than to order a complete tank at the end of February. I guess what makes me an idiot is that I operated under the assumption that the team was actually interested in winning as many games as possible.

1. Burke had surgery on October 15th. It was reported that he'd be out 6-12 weeks. The OP was made at the end of October; Burke was playing 5 weeks after surgery. Not only did you not have to predict the future, the future worked in your favor.

2. The Jazz schedule was particularly difficult at the start and end of the season.

3. How did the FO order a tank?

As GVC mentioned, scheduling played a HUGE part in the Jazz' start. Even WITH a healthy Burke, I don't see Utah winning more than 2-3 more games during that stretch. Jazz played more away games and they played top-tier teams. But, if a team plays a difficult schedule to start, guess what happens? The schedule lightens up (more home games, and games against weaker WC teams or against the EC).

FO certainly didn't ORDER a tank. Had that been the case, Jefferson and Williams would have been parked on the bench and Clark, Thomas and then Murphy would have been playing more. That's exactly what happened with GS; starters played sparingly (and Curry was shut down) and they trotted out a D-League lineup for the 4th quarter of most games after the all-star break.

I don't think there's anyone on this forum who could convince me that either of those two years, the Jazz had a more talented roster than right now. Not only are we not getting Wiggins, it would be a big shock if the Jazz won fewer than 35 games. I think the chances of the Jazz playing games in May 2014 are so much higher than the chances of the Jazz getting Wiggins a month later. I have no idea why anyone thinks the Jazz will even be in the lottery next year, let alone picking top 3.

Thanks for the flashback to last summer. I'm sure Stoked and 'em will predict 48+ wins and beating out GSW for the 6th spot again...

I remember when we started a season 13-1. That's almost 20% of a season. We were on pace for 76 wins. That'd be the most wins in NBA history.
