I do not find Nathan Phillips to be genuine. His interview does match up with what the video shows. His exact word were "this young man put himself in front of me". That is a complete lie, and its an important lie because it changes how people view things. Niether CNN, Washington Post, or any other leftist media corrects this. He also claimed he was scared? How does that make any sense? He was the one who put himself in that situation. He is the one who was looking for the stare down. He is the one who got right up into the kids face banging a drum. That is not a scared man. That is an instigator looking for trouble. Secondly, not one of these kids did anything to make him feel scared. They didnt say anything hateful. They didnt touch him. There werent chants of build that wall. They smiled and danced to his song. His whole CNN interview was complete BS.

I think it's entirely possible Phillips was seeing what he wanted, or expected to see, and as a long time activist for Native rights and issues, he was seeing things through the eyes of someone aware of centuries of oppression of his own people. For instance, to illustrate my point, in one interview, he stated that he could have walked around Sandmann, and continued walking up the steps of the Lincoln memorial, but he was of the mind that he should not have had to do that. He seemed to equate the fact that Sandmann stood in his way as symbolic of centuries of disrespect for his people. He expected that Sandmann should stand aside, and when that did not happen, we had the stare down that comprised the short clip that ignited the social media firestorm.

Now, he indicated that the song he was chanting was one that was "designed" to create a more calming atmosphere, and defuse volitile situations. I do think it was unrealistic to expect white students with no comprehension of that fact, seeing him and his fellow Native activists approaching them in that fashion, would really have no idea whatsoever what he was doing. It's almost as if, and I do believe this, that he thought his chanting and drumming would have some "magical" effect and create a calmer atmosphere. I think, if that is what he felt that traditional chant would effect, that it was silly of him to think the students would understand that at all.

As far as his claim of fear, he stated the students transferred their hatred directed at the Black Israelites, to him. That he felt they were actually on the verge of tearing him apart. Well, I don't see him as a bad man. I see him as seeing the greater world of American society and history as aligned against his people. But, in this instance, this can easily lead to him imprinting upon the students that knowledge of centuries of repression. And that is a form of blindness in the moment. He was seeing what he had conditioned himself to expect. Which will not lead to clarity in the moment. It will lead to misinterpretation on his part. He may have well experienced fear at what he had gotten himself into, but, yes, part of that was of his own doing.

To some degree, this tendency to make assumptions that can be overlayed on unfolding events, or overlayed on those whom we perceive to be antithetical to our own views, is infecting our society and upholding the hyper partisanship that besets our society at this time. I'm a good guy. A good man. Not at all some evil ogre. Yet, here we have one poster saying I am responsible for the starvation and deaths of countless people. He is an extreme case, but, to some degree, this demonizing of the opposition is why we are at such an impasse in general.

But you know the answer to that question. One person is a white youth, wearing a MAGA hat. The other person is a person of color. And the video shows that face off, and only that face off. It's an edited glimpse of a greater context unknown at the time the video went viral. It's precisely because we are where we are in America today, including members of the media, that it becomes easy to see what we come to believe we do in fact see in that particular edited snippet of time. Our own preconceptions carry the day. Viral videos are a trap, in other words.
