Trade deadline discussion

They gave up a pick in the Graham deal too… they just gave up a valuable pick and a veteran role player for another two guard who is too small to guard 2s.

They are lucky they hit it out of the park with Jones. But imagine they kept Lonzo and the treasure trove of picks… I get why they traded Holiday. It’s just you can’t be impatient if you do that move.
They should have kept Lonzo and the pick instead of getting Graham, but I just don't know how bad that whole Lonzo situation was.

As for McCollum, I don't know how to fully judge it yet. Ingram and Jonas are in their primes pretty much, and Zion's injury has crushed that team. McCollum will give Jonas and Ingram a ton more space to work with. More than Hart was providing.

If Zion comes back 100%, that team is going to be very hard to guard. The biggest issue with the Pelicans has been Zion not being what people thought he would be. Hard to blame the GM for that.

What? He’s been exactly what some people feared he could be: fat and perpetually hurt because of it (topped off with maybe some level of intent cuz he didn’t want to be in NO).

I would’ve traded down honestly. Easy to say that in hindsight but I’ve always thought Zion was a generational-level hype.

I agree 100%. I would have traded down for Morant.

Fat is potential in disguise... sometimes. If the kid was committed and self aware he could have been just a transcendent star. I was skeptical but you had to take him. They just have no team or organizational culture. They should have begged Ty Lue or someone like that to come in.

Healthy Dame and DM would be nearly impossible to guard. If we could swing that without gutting everyone else that would be unbelievable. Imagine

Dame
DM
Royce (Paschall maybe if Royce has to be part of the trade)
(PF - maybe even Paschall?) - assuming Bogey would have to go to get Dame, probably Gay as well, but maybe if can keep him have Gay in this spot?
Gobert

Wow.

Conley would also likely have to go to make that work. No way we could get him without giving up damn near everyone - Conley, Bogey, Clarkson, other contracts, many picks.

But holy hell that is a starting 5 for the ages.

Zion could be the best player in the game if he applied himself, but his work ethic is awful. It worked for him in high school and college as his athleticism carried him and he wasn't carrying as much, but you can't be 300+ pounds in this league and expect to have a long career. You can't even comfortably carry 280 at his height.

At 250 pounds, he'd be close to unguardable, but is he willing to put that work in? I don't see it.

Portland has set themselves up pretty nicely to trade for Grant now if they want him. Dame, Simmons, Hart, Grant, and Nurkic has the makings of a rebuild already.
