Yeah, a lot of rebuilds are very dependent on luck. Do you get the no. 1 pick when Oladipo or Anthony Bennett is in contention for it or when there is a Zion/LeBron/AD type in the mix? Or when drafting at 5, can you find a sucker or two to pass on Luka and a third one to take your trade up offer? But yeah... luck plays a part in it, but it's still the best way to acquire generational talent for a small team like the Jazz.

The examples to look at are Boston's last rebuild, OKC and Houston. Jazz aren't going to tank like Philadelphia.

Here is Boston's rebuild under Danny Ainge:
** 2014 - drafted Marcus Smart at #6.
** 2015 - drafted Terry Rozier at #16.
** 2016 - drafted Jaylen Brown with BRK's pick at #3
** 2017 - drafted Jayson Tatum at #3 with BRK's pick, trading back with Philly from #1
** 2018 - drafted Robert Williams at #27
** 2019 - drafted Romeo Langford at #14 and Grant Williams at #22

Their core is Smart / Brown / Tatum / Williams, a core that took 5 years to put together.

Boston also acquired big FAs like Hayward and Horford. They swung trades for Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker. But they lost Hayward without compensation, lost Kyrie without compensation, and lost Horford without compensation before he came back a couple years later. Kemba's knees seem to have gone out on him too. So the Celtics' roster took some losses.

I think you probably agree more about that year than you think. It was a wasted year and that kind of lame duck team is the exact stuff I have really no interest in.

To elaborate a little more: they missed a chance to get a high pick that year. So I would say it doesn’t qualify as a rebuild year, despite that they were obviously headed that way and the organization probably even wished they were playing for a pick.
 
The other thing about bottoming out is that you can rent your cap space to hoard picks and you can end up in a situation where a max cap slot is always near while developing premier talent. This hoard of assets allows the team to continue to build beyond the team becoming good because you can use it replenish the talent pipeline or use in trades for those final pieces.

Those benefits are mutually exclusive to this notion of retooling. You get the hoard being bad and strategic or you just don’t and then every move has to be perfect (or lucky, more likely).

Say we traded Donovan and got a player back in the deal that lead us to the play-in game. That would be ****ing terrible. They got set back a year for what? To get an extra pick for Paul?

What we really want to do is build a competitive team piece by piece and keep drafting in the lottery with other teams' picks. NOLA has Laker picks. HOU has BRK picks. That's what we want.

Okay lmao… when did the process start? They had 4 ****** seasons from the time they started the process… and they missed on picks and had all sorts of weird **** happen… and still came out with a team that is a contender. The two years in the lotto the years before were they trying but still sucking years.

Look SA did the.. stay competitive thing for a few years … wasted several years in the middle… and what do they have to show for it? They get to start to tank now… that is where we are headed if we don’t trade Don… making the play in and getting the 12th pick… sounds fun.

If you could guarantee me Wemby or Scoot I’d do it but you can’t. It’s a 14% chance at best at Wemby.

I can just see us getting the 3rd or 4th pick and being in the lottery the next 4 years after.

If we picked at #3 or #4 in the next draft, the Jazz would be getting a prospect who is likely as good as Donovan or better, and he'd be under team control for 7 years at least.
