Trey Burke's Ankle Protection Plan - Q & A

I've noticed something about Trey Burke's jump shot. Maybe its been mentioned before, but I havent noticed. He's good at spreading his legs on the come down from his jump shot to make sure he doesn't land on the shoe of the defender coming under him. Keeping them close increases the chance you turn your ankle.. He also does this while maintaining focus on his shot. Its not everytime, just when it's necessary.

I find this to be good news in terms of his durability because its not easy to do. It can be distracting to worry about whats going on underneath you as a player. A lot of guys it doesn't bother because they never experience that severe sprain after coming down on a shoe. Remember when Deron came down on Derrick Rose's shoe in that preseason game? He was never the same shooter after that. I noticed everytime someone came to close to getting underneath him, he wasn't very accurate.

I just noticed this stuff because it happened to me before too. As a young man I didnt know how easy it could happen if you arent careful. It screwed up my ankle pretty good. I never felt as comfortable shooting a jump shot after that when someone would get too close. I was never a stand still shooter then. Thought it was easier to control your shot in the air. I started paying more attention to where my feet were landing, but its definitely an adjustment. You ending up rushing shots more.

Anyways, thats my 2 cents about it. I think its a big plus. Trey seems to have a good feel for whats going on around him. And he does it while being clutch too. Its really impressive. At first I thought maybe it was just an off balanced shot when I saw it in the the final four, saw a few other times too, but then again last night... I think he has perfected it. Maybe. Maybe its too soon to say. I dunno we'll see.

I haven't been able to see too many games being out of state, but I appreciate the observation. I think that ankle roll changed D Will's career trajectory. If Trey can avoid that it is one more variable we don't have to worry about.

His true shooting is the same. He just takes a higher number of 3s since leaving Utah and as a consequence of less driving to the hoop he avg's less FTs. But that maybe a side effect of him worrying about his lower body getting D-Rose'd in the paint. Yeah that's a word. You heard it here first. Next week at work when your co worker tells you how he forgot his marriage anniversary he'll say: I D-Rose'd that hard. She's mad at me now. I think I need a more comfy couch.

Do you think that maybe Derrick Rose's injuries are karma for what he did to Deron?

....the simple solution is to have your ankles TAPED by the trainer before every game! It then becomes almost impossible to get a bad sprain even if you do land on the other guys foot/shoe! Before I taped my ankles I'd end up with plenty of sprains. After I started tapping them.....none!
