Trey Burke's potential

I hope your optimistic view of the young Jazz players is more accurate than my skeptical view.
Well with the Hayward pick (#9) we could have taken aldrich, henry, or Davis.
George is better than Hayward but not by much.

You have to admit that Gobert was a home run, that one's obvious.

Hood at 21 is a fantastic pick.

Kanter is an ok player that puts up good numbers though that pick obviously didn't work out (kanter was the pick that 90% of gm's probably would have made too)

Burks is better that most #12 picks if you look at it historically. (We did miss by not taking leonard though) And I think Burks is not at his peak yet either.

Trading up for trey was horrible.

Like I said, dante is still up to bat and is very hard to judge right now but again, most teams would have taken him at #5 as well.

So I'm not sure why your are pessimistic about how the jazz have drafted.

Our biggest problem with this current team is that we have not aquired any big time free agents. (Possibly by design since we were rebuilding)

We have done fine drafting most of the time

Nah he is still young... players generally get better into their mid 20s and I expect Trey to as well.

The real issue is roster composition. If we had a steady starter at point guard and Trey was allowed to be a backup and develop he'd be fine and we could stay patient with him. Since we have Exum we really needed Trey to be further along and it creates stress because our play at that position is by far our greatest weakness. If either Trey or Dante doesn't take a leap and we don't bring someone else in we will have an issue. I'd trade Trey if we could get decent value in return, but not sure exactly where he fits. Maybe Dallas would do the 21st pick and Felton for Trey (We'd cut Felton... saves them a little more cap space). Anything short of that type of deal I think we need to hang on to him. The third year is a huge year for PGs and if we traded him for nothing we may end up regretting it. He had an awful year and I suspect his trade value is about as low as it will ever be... that doesn't mean we shouldn't move a different direction if its for the good of the team.

Also, shame on the Jazz. I know drafting is a gamble of sorts, and all young players don't turn out. But the Jazz aren't hitting homeruns with their draft picks, and they are barely getting the occasional single. They need to do better. The landscape of the nba and Utah's relative position makes it necessary that they hit on a higher than average number of their picks.

Please name the teams that have done better than the Jazz in the draft in the last 5 years.

Layne Vashro has a statistical comp that measures NBA players years and compares it to other players based on stats, age, and height/weight. The comps that come up give me hope. Kemba, D Will, Mike Conley, and Nick Van Excel all come up. He is similar to them the year before they were effective NBA players.

Basically if he doesn't show good improvement this year it'd be safe to write him off I think.

I still have lots of faith in him to be a quality pro. He may never be an All Star, but he could be a solid spark plug off the bench maybe even a 6th man. Seeing his rise from good college player in a freshman year to player of the year, NCAA Final Four hero, and lottery pick in his sophomore year gives me the confidence that he can make great leaps and will put in the work. I hope he spends a little bit of time again working with Stockton and see Dante as both a teammate and as competition.
