Trump/Hillary Debate

The thing about the first debate is it becomes completely forgotten the moment the second debate begins. Kerry trounced Bush in their first debate in 2004 and Romney clearly out-matched Obama in their first debate in 2012. Neither one mattered in the end because in both cases the loser of the first debate improved in the second debate and all the stories in the media were about how much "better" they did. There's a cynical part of me that thinks Bush and Obama both purposely lost their first debate so they can level-set expectations for their second debate.

The point is nobody rides the momentum from the first debate into The White House so whatever bounce Clinton gets will ultimately be meaningless.

Of course there could be a more systemic problem on the Trump side - that being he's totally out of his league in these formats. Yes, they're both ******** artists; but the one thing I think we can all agree on is Hillary's ******** is WAY more polished than Donald's. This isn't like the republican debate where whoever throws out the tastiest red meat to the base wins - you actually have to make it appear like you know what you're talking about.

Good point. I think Hillary just needs to keep her cool as she pretty much did during this debate. She could probably smile a little less too... no need to act incredulous at Trumps B.S.

I agree if Clinton gets a bump in the polls her lead could dissipate before November and that future debates will play a factor. I’m not saying Clinton will win if she moves ahead of Trump in the next week or two, just that she will likely lose if she can’t show some positive movement from Trump’s disastrous performance last night.

The one thing that I totally agree on with Trump is how the Fed has artificially propped up the economy. There's very little real investment going on on Wall Street. I was around for the boom in the 90's and today it's a completely different animal - it's all about accumulating stock and making acquisitions. If we raised interest rates I think this could all fall like a house of cards - literally in weeks.

It's damn refreshing to hear that from someone running for President - I just wish it wasn't coming from a narcissistic lunatic.

There is a reason Trump said that "[He] could shoot somebody, and [he] wouldn't lose voters." I've largely feared what you're saying. I don't understand how people can even claim to be mulling over Trump's "policies." What the hell is Trump going to do that will surprise them positively? Most people who are voting for Trump know exactly who he is. I think the debates will do nothing for Trump either way. I think your insight is right on, and if voters aren't even open to Clinton, the unthinkable will happen.

I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theories, but when I saw the huge numbers the Drudge Report was polling for Trump, I went in to vote for Clinton. It wouldn't register my vote - just sat on a loop. I didn't try to vote for Trump to see if it would take it, so the possibility exists that it was a phone issue - although it was having no problem voting on anything else.

It was more than just Drudge. Most online polls gave the debate to him. Now they are faulty and what not but most online polls swung his way. Most media reports and articles went her way.
