What's new

TTFN, Jazzfanz :''(

If you are lucky enough be allowed to have a bike.

So, is that all they really do? There has to be other parts to the mission, right? Or is it pretty much just getting people listen to you talk about Mormonism?

its actully a really great exp. I went to Fort worth Texas. i had a blast!! who knew riding a bike, knocking on doors, having doors slamed in your face and talking about God and Jesus could be so much fun. It really is a blast though!! I learned more in those two years about people and God then i could assume some people learn in a lifetime.

You are there to build up the LDS faith. I spent about half my time doing things that were not directly preaching the gospel. I did hundreds of service projects. Building homes, fences, clearing fields, cleaning, chopping trees, hauling water, feeding animals...

I tend to see a patern of missionaries focusing to much on converting new members. They miss the chance to build up existing member or bringing inactive ones back to the church. More true break thrus will come from those that live in those areas.

But you are focused on building and expanding the church 24/7/365 for two years straight.

Didn't someone also say this was self-financed? How do people manage to afford not working for 2 years and afford the trip and cost of living?

Alot of the guys I know have saved up prior to the mission to pay for it. sometimes parents help and family memebers. when i left on my mission back in 2008 we were told it would be about 10,000$ that we would need saved up. every missionary is suppose to have the same amount saved up. it is then used to help provide for the missionarys all over the world. since some parts of the wprld cost more to (live like england) those misionarys recive more, while those in south america and other places may get less. but everyone still puts in the same amount.

That's certainly a large part. Hopefully, once you have found such people you get to spend a lot of time actually talking to them about Mormonism. :-) Missionaries also spend a lot of time involved with just general community service, and depending on the location they may also be involved with leadership of the local congregation. They often also get asked to visit local members who might not currently be very active in the church, checking on how their family is doing, sharing gospel messages with them, and trying to "reactivate" them. That type of thing.

Yep. Also, other families in the local congregation may help out if the missionary/missionary's family for some reason can't afford it. I think there's also a church-wide "general missionary fund" that members can donate to, to help out a missionary they don't know personally, but I'm actually not at all sure how that works. I could be completely wrong on that.

Not sure if serious...

spy, I know you're still watching. well, you will. quitting cold turkey requires special meds to keep the withdrawal symptons at bay. You'll be clear when you come back though, but take it from an addict who knows the score, you should think twice before starting using things againll...

So are you not allowed to access the internet during a mission? Never mind, I wiki'd it. Wow, guess not or do nearly anything. Oh well, as long as it's not me.

Enjoy the new experiences and friendships - 2 years will fly by like that (snaps)!
