Ty interview

I'm not sure if it's this interview, but I heard a small bit from Ty today where he confirmed that there would be changes on defense. He repeated himself, so it sounds like it will be more than a tweak. Long time coming................

So 96 combined mins at the 4/5. Jefferson and Millsap each averaged 35 mins last season; Favors averaged 20. That's 90 right there if NOTHING else changes.
1. Do you want Favors to only get 20 mins again?
2. Do you think Millsap and Jefferson would agree to cut their minutes down to 25 each?
3. Will Okur play 0 games?
4. Should we just "Sloan" Kanter and keep him on the bench or in the D-League and expect he'll develop into a starter with no NBA game experience?

Of course there are injuries. There will likely be DNP's by a few of the bigs which will free up some time. But on a regular basis, if Millsap does NOT play the 3, then Paul, Al and Derrick could be expected to eat up all the time at 4/5. Not playing Memo is no big deal. But Kanter, however inexperienced, needs to get 10-15 mins/per to speed up his development. He needs to play against other backup bigs in the NBA, not the undersized or unathletic scrubs in the D-League.

Thank you! I have been saying this for far too long. Why draft PROSPECTS if we are not going to play them. We complain that Kanter doesn't have much game experience so we draft him to not give him any? ha ha

This is a joke. The Jazz organization is a joke and they need to trade Millsap and Raja Bell. Both need to go. I love Millsap. Been a homer for years. I liked him before the Jazz drafted him. I brag all the time that I was right about him being a sleeper coming out of college. But the fact is we won't contend with Millsap starting. His value can only go down from here. Favors is the future and so is Kanter. If we don't think Kanter is the future than why did we draft him????????? The future means invest time into him! Just drafting somebody doesn't mean you invested into him or even giving him a paycheck. It means nothings. Invest game time into a player means your serious about him.

These young guys need minutes. Keeping Veterans is smart to help the young guys mindsets while they play and teach them composure. But keeping on the bench wastes away good talent. I am not worried about wins as much as development. Jazz management is a joke. I have no confidence in them until I see changes.

#4 sounds like suggesting that "varsity" (not D-league) on-court experience is necessary for player development (a fundamental concept that Sloan selectively ignored). Quite a concept.

+1 for pointing out that a bare minimum for a young player is around 10 MPG on a regular basis.

Corbin's unwillingness or unawareness about the notion of sharing and implementing that basic principle on the radio is a bit concerning. We're not even talking about a second-round Ukranian with an iffy off-court record; we're talking about a #3 draft pick (as well as a pick in the teens that can be another solution at SG).

You mean we might stay forcing drives to the hoop to the baseline like most teams in the league?

The obvious solution at the 4/5 is reduce Jefferson and Millsap's minutes to 32 a game. Play Millsap at 3 for 5 to 10 minutes a game. That leaves and additional 11 minutes for Favors a game. Use Memo to cover for injuries and foul trouble. Send Kanter to the D league. Sign a emergency big to the minimum. And Favors will be in foul trouble a lot. Also tell all the bigs that we have good backups so challenge shots.

On nights that Memo can't play bring Kanter back.

And on playing the rookies, Corbin is feeling pressure to win. He knows what he can get from his vets. He doesn't trust the rookies yet. If Kanter and Burks can prove they deserve minutes in camp and in the preseason, then they will get minutes.

Same reason almost every team in the league does the exact same thing. You draft on potential which in the vast majority of cases takes time to develop and get game ready. Game minutes obviously are part of it but the notion that Jazz treat young players different than the rest of the league is a popular myth on this board. Very few NBA coaches want to play rookies and not many rookies are ready for prime time year one.

If I were the coaching and training staff looking down the barrel of this schedule and figuring out how to distribute minutes in the front court, my magic number would be 28 min/game +/-. That has traditionally been a good number for Millsap; given last season's foul rate, I wouldn't expect to get more from Favors on a nightly basis; etc.

If 28 min/game was the average for AJ, DF, and PM, then Millsap would only need to play SF 8 minutes a game for there to be 20 minutes to split between Memo and Kanter or dole out more to a player on-fire. I officially endorse giving every one of those to Kanter as long as he isn't sucking it up beyond expectations; I don't think he will.

8 min, y'all.
